Extractions: C OLLECTION OF R USSIAN A CTIVIST A NDREI S INIAVSKI C OMES TO A RCHIVES The photo shows Andrei Siniavski in 1973 when he was allowed to leave the Soviet Union. On his desk is a copy of a book by Hoover fellow Robert Conquest, The Courage of Genius: The Pasternak Affair. The Hoover Institution has acquired the papers of the Russian writer and human rights activist Andrei Siniavski. Siniavski and his trial for allegedly publishing anti-Soviet slander in foreign countries are considered key in mobilizing the human rights movement that contributed in several significant ways to the forces that discredited and toppled the Soviet system. "Siniavski was a writer whose fiction provoked the regime to frenzy and galvanized the movement that eventually brought it down," said Robert Conquest after hearing about the acquisition of the collection. Beginning the in 1950s, Siniavski sent abroad writings - under the pseudonym Abram Tertz - that he could not publish legally in the Soviet Union. He was arrested in 1965, tried in 1966, and sentenced to one of the infamous Soviet forced labor camps.

He was arrested in 1965, tried in 1966 and sentenced to forced labor. Demonstrations against the trial galvanized young intellectuals, among them Vladimir Bukovsky and Alexander Ginzburg, and inducted them into the human rights movement. In response to international protests at Siniavski's mistreatment, the regime allowed him to emigrate to France in 1973.

Their "crime" had been to smuggle out, and have printed in the West under the pseudonyms of Abram Tertz and Nikolay Arzhak, various works of fiction and, in the case of Tertz-Sinyavsky, an essay, On Socialist Realism . Both were sent to work camps, Sinyavsky for seven years (though he was released after six) and Daniel for five. A year after obtaining his freedom, Sinyavsky emigrated to France; already a noted scholar at the time of his arrest, he took up a post teaching Russian literature at the Sorbonne. Daniel remained in Russia, and died in 1988.

For many years the label of totalitarian regime has fostered an oversimplified parallel between the Nazi, Stalinist or even more broadly Communist art production and aesthetics with little differentiation between these two regimes and their particular contexts. It is the aim of this course to revisit the complex relationships between politics and aesthetics using the dramatic and cinematic art of the Soviet Union, Poland, and Czechoslovakia as an example, A broad range of topics and aesthetic choices will help to examine the often-claimed uniformity of arts created in extremis Course Requirements: Students are expected to participate in class discussions based on the assigned and general readings and screenings of the films and plays. They are required to present one oral presentation (undergraduate students 10 min., graduate students 15 min.) and to submit one essay on a topic related to the class program and discussed with one of the instructors (undergraduate students 10 pages, graduates 20).
