Extractions: Sir Philip Sidney (1554-86) was the first in a line of English poet-critics, and although his poetic writings ( Astrophil and Stella and the Arcadia ) exhibit a reflexivity about both the craft and function of poetry, his importance to the history of literary theory rests on a single work, the Apology for Poetry. Written early in the 1580s and published simultaneously in two slightly different posthumous editions of 1595 ( The Defence of Poesie and An Apology for Poetry ), Sidney's Defence provides a brilliant synthesis of classical and Renaissance poetic theory. It is notable for its harmonious eclecticism, for it exhibits the influence of Plato aristotle.html">Aristotle , and Horace , received both directly and through the mediation of such Italian Renaissance critics as Antonio Sebastiano Minturno, Lodovico Castelvetro, and Julius Caesar Scaliger. While the Defence has traditionally and condescendingly been seen as an elegant but derivative work, recent analyses have persuasively revealed the political and theoretical issues at stake (Ferguson) and the subtle rhetorical dimensions that project an authorial persona andin an anticipation of modern reader-response theoryengage the response of its audience (Barnes). Defence was to have on subsequent theories of literature, since its linkage of the rhetorical with the civic virtue of prudence produced a legacy that valued praxis (evident in action) over gnosis (abstract knowledge). Yet while Sidney sought the authority and prestige that rhetoric could give, he distinguished poetry as having a freedom and inventiveness that was not characteristic of rhetoric.

The Gardens of Penshurst Sir William Sidney (1482 - 1554) W illiam was a courtier to King Henry VIII and tutor (and later steward) to his son Edward. In 1552 - one year before his death aged just 26 - Edward VI granted Penshurst to Sir William Sidney. William, now aged 70, had little time to enjoy Penshurst though and his son, Henry, inherited the property on his death just two years later. Sir Henry Sidney (1529 - 1586) H enry had spent his early life at court as the companion of the the young prince Edward. Within two years of Penshurst being given to the Sidney family both his father and childhood friend - now King Edward VI - were dead. Edward contracted tuberculosis (although it is also rumoured that he was poisoned) and is said to have died in Henry's arms. I n 1553 Henry married Lady Mary Dudley, sister to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick and Lord Guildford Dudley who was married to the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey. She was grand-daughter to Henry VIII and had been named by Edward VI (under pressure from John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland - Henry Sidney's father-in law) as his successor.

The Gardens of Penshurst The History of Penshurst T he history of Penshurst precedes Sir William by some 150 years. The estate, consisting of 4000 acres of hunting land, was bought by Sir John de Pultney in 1338 as a country retreat within easy reach of London. Pultney was a successful merchant, dealing in wool and wine, who had also lent significant amounts of money to the king, Edward III to support his hostilities against France. The enormous great hall that he built, measuring 60ft by 32ft, was built of local sandstone with chestnut beams decorated with life-size wooden figures. Now known as the Baron's Hall , it soared to a height of 60ft and took three years to complete.

Extractions: SIDNEY, SIR PHILIP After meeting Don John of Austria at Louvain, March 1577, he proceeded to Heidelberg and Prague. He persuaded the electors brother, John Casimir, to consider proposals for a league of Protestant princes, and also for a conference among the Protestant churches. At Prague he ventured on a harangue to the emperor, advocating a general league against Spain and Rome. This address naturally produced no effect, but does not seem to have been resented as much as might have been expected. On the return journey he visited William of Orange, who formed a high opinion of Sidney. In April 1577 Mary Sidney married Henry Herbert, 2nd earl of Pembroke, and in the summer Philip paid the first of many visits to her at her new home at Wilton. But later in the year he was at court defending his fathers interests, particularly against the earl of Ormonde, who was doing all he could to prejudice Elizabeth against the lord deputy. Meanwhile he prosecuted his duties as a courtier and as member for Kent in parliament. On the 15th and 16th of May 1581 he was one of the four challengers in a tournament arranged in honor of the visit of the duke of Anjou. In 1579 Stephen Gosson had dedicated to Sidney his School of Abuse, an attack on the stage, and incidentally on poetry. Sidney was probably moved by this treatise to write his own Apologie for Poetrie, dating from about 1581. In 1583 he was knighted in order that he might act as proxy for Prince John Casimir, who was to be installed as Knight of the Garter, and in the autumn of that year he married Frances, daughter of his friend and patron Sir Francis Walsingham, a girl of fourteen or fifteen years of age. In 1584 he met Giordano Bruno at the house of his friend Fulke Greville, and two of the philosophers books are dedicated to him.

Extractions: Duke Basilius, ruler of Arcadia, his wife Gynecia and their young daughters Pamela and Philoclea go to live in a remote rural village in an attempt to avoid a fearful oracle that Basilius has received at Delphi, announcing that his elder daughter will be stolen from him, the younger "embrace an uncouth love," while he will commit adultery with his wife and a foreigner will sit on his throne. Two noble cousins, Pyrocles and Musidorus, are travelling through Arcadia when Pyrocles sees a painting of Philoclea and falls in love with her. He decides that the best way of approaching her is for him to disguise himself as a girl, Cleophila. As he comes to the village, disguised, he meets the rough shepherd Dametas who is guarding the family, then the Duke who falls in love with "her" and urges her to stay. Musidorus, watching events from the woods, sees Pamela and falls in love with her, so he dresses as a shepherd, Dorus, in the hope of being able to stay near her. A lion and bear suddenly appear. Cleophila saves Philoclea, killing the lion; Gynecia realizes that this must be a man, and falls in love with him. Dorus saves Pamela by killing the bear. By the end of the book, everyone is in love, including Philoclea, who is most perplexed by her feelings towards Cleophila.
