Extractions: Manuscript Division In July 1848 more than 300 men and women assembled in Seneca Falls, New York, for the nation's first women's rights convention. Elizabeth Cady Stanton documented the historic 1848 meeting by compiling this scrapbook of contemporary newspaper clippings. Years later Stanton's daughter Harriot enhanced the scrapbook with several additions, including this photograph of a clipping depicting her mother in the controversial bloomer outfit. Stanton's cousin Elizabeth Smith Miller introduced the outfit and editor Amelia Bloomer publicized its healthful and liberating benefits in her newspaper The Lily Additional Views: National Reformer , August 3, 1848

Extractions: In 1758, Mary Jemison was living with her family in western Pennsylvania when a group of Shawnee Indians and French soldiers captured her during the French and Indian War. Jemison was fifteen years old at the time of her capture. Her parents and three of her younger siblings were killed. A group of Seneca Indians purchased Jemison and took her with them to the Ohio Country. The Senecas adopted the teenager and gave her the name Dehgewanus, meaning "Two Fallen Voices." Dehgewanus learned the Seneca ways and married She-nin-jee, a member of the Deleware Indians. They had two children, but only one survived. Soon after the second child was born, Dehgewanus and Sheninjee began a trip to Sheninjee's homeland along the Genesee River in New York. Sheninjee died along the way, but Dehgewanus continued on the trip. The New York Senecas made a home for her at Little Beard's Town. Dehgewanus married again, this time to a Seneca, and had seven more children. She became a member of Seneca society and remained in New York for the rest of her life. Dehgewanus died in 1833 at the age of ninety. Like many other Indian captives, Jemison preferred life with the natives rather than returning to her previous white lifestyle. Extractions: Finger Lakes Seneca Lake Seneca Lake was named for the Seneca Indian Nation, one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy who used to inhabit the area. The word Seneca is derived from the Indian name assiniki, which means, "place of stone" or "stony place". Seneca Lake has the steepest shoreline of all the Finger Lakes, particularly at the southern end. Two of the main inlets are Catharine Creek at the southern end and Keuka Lake Outlet, which becomes an inlet at Dresden. The flow from many ravines goes into the lake, some of which have spectacular waterfalls, including the falls of Big Stream at Glenora, of Sawmill Creek at Hector, and the Silver Thread Falls on Mill Creek at Lodi Landing. The lake is also fed by many springs along its bottom. Seneca Lake outlets into the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, which joins Seneca and Cayuga Lakes at their northern ends. Seneca Lake is the deepest and widest of the Finger Lakes. Due to the large water volume, Seneca Lake has a pronounced moderating influence on the air temperature around its periphery. This is the principal reason that the lake has evolved into a prime grape-growing area.

The emergency rent, mortgage and utility payment program will assist 174 households consisting of 525 individuals and the emergency home repair program will serve 23 households consisting of 62 individuals (2004).
