Scott, the first person ordained in Texas as an evangelist of the Presbyterian Church qv qv and raised their son to be bilingual. The family returned to San Antonio in 1878. Strongly influenced by the evangelical teaching and anti-Catholic attitude of Melinda Rankin, qv qv curtailed missionary activities. In 1935 the Advanced Field, a missionary jurisdiction established by Scott in Taylor, was absorbed by the Texas-Mexican Presbytery, and Scott became a member of that body. He retired the same year and died in Temple, Texas, on December 7, 1937. Many Mexican-American congregations trace their origins to Scott and his pioneering ministry. Later, the family moved (in a manner very reminiscent of Redguantlet ) to the clean air of George Square where Scott grew up, with a brief but vital interlude in the Borders to help the sickly boy - though it did not prevent an attack of polio which gave him a lame leg for life. He grew up full of energy, pursued school and university with enthusiasm but even more enthusiasm went into his reading, collecting Scottish Border ballads (to become Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border ), learning German (he was an early translator of Schiller and Bürger ), and trying his own hand at poetry. Scott was a man of prodigious energy as well as talent. All his adult life he was a working lawyer, but this did not prevent him from a social life which put him at the centre of literary Edinburgh (some would say, literary Scotland) and a steady involvement in prose writing, reviewing and periodical publication. In 1814 his novel Waverley, based on the Jacobite Rising was an instant success and over the next dozen or so years he wrote 23 historical novels. At the age of 18 months his right leg was rendered permanently lame by polio, and as an infant he was sent to his grandfather's farm in the Borders. He studied law at Edinburgh University from 1783, with interruptions because of his illness. He was indentured in his father's legal practice on 31 March 1786, but did not qualify as an advocate until 11 July 1792. Scott was to continue in his legal career until retiring in 1830. Scott published all his novels anonymously. Initially this may have been a precaution against the possible failure of "Waverley"; but even after its enormous success, Scott seems to have enjoyed prolonging the mystery (he was nicknamed "The Great Unknown" and "The Wizard Of The North"). His identity as the author of "Waverley" and its successors soon became an open secret, fairly widely known, but it was not until February 1827 that he officially "revealed" himself, at a public dinner in Edinburgh. Scott's novels generally depicted a deep understanding of the people and period they attempted to portray.In his Scottish novels he treats the history with great care and affection.

Extractions: The Sir Walter Scott Way is a 92 mile / 148 kilometre or 94 mile / 151 kilometre cross-country walk between Moffat in South Central Scotland to Cockburnspath on the South East Scottish Coastline. It runs through lowland valleys, by lochs and reservoirs, alongside the River Tweed and its tributories, over several Corbetts and through communities of history and interest. Along its length there are numerous connections with Sir Walter Scott , one of Scotland's greatest writers. It was indeed this countryside that inspired many of his great poems and novels, and where he spent a very large part of his life. The Way follows for a significant length the waymarked line of the eastern section of the Southern Upland Way and as such it is not a totally unique route. However the new way was defined with a specific historical connection as well as a complexity and distance to suit the growing number of walkers undertaking 5 to 7 day long-distance walking routes. Extractions: On Sir Walter Scott Part I And so in sum, with regard to Lockhart's Life of Scott, readers that believe in us shall read it with the feeling that a man of talent, decision and insight wrote it; wrote it in seven volumes, not in one, because the public would pay for it better in that state; but wrote it with courage, with frankness, sincerity; on the whole, in a very readable, recommendable manner, as things go. Whosoever needs it can purchase it, or purchase the loan of it, with assurance more than usual that he has ware for his money. And now enough of the written Life; we will glance a little at the man and his acted life. Or coming down to our own times, was not August Kotzebue popular? Kotzebue, not so many years since, saw himself, if rumour and hand-clapping could be credited, the greatest man going; saw visibly his Thoughts, dressed-out in plush and pasteboard, permeating and perambulating civilised Europe; the most iron visages weeping with him, in all theatres from Cadiz to Kamtchatka; his own 'astonishing genius' meanwhile producing two tragedies or so per month: he, on the whole, blazed high enough: he too has gone out into Night and Orcus, and already is not. We will omit this of popularity altogether; and account it as making simply nothing towards Scott's greatness or non-greatness, as an accident, not a quality. Shorn of this falsifying nimbus, and reduced to his own natural dimensions, there remains the reality, Walter Scott, and what we can find in him: to be accounted great, or not great, according to the dialects of men. Friends to precision of epithet will probably deny his title to the name 'great.' It seems to us there goes other stuff to the making of great men than can be detected here. One knows not what idea worthy of the name of great what purpose, instinct or tendency, that could be called great, Scott ever was inspired with His life was worldly; his ambitions were worldly. There is nothing spiritual in him; all is economical, material, of the earth earthy. A love of picturesque, of beautiful, vigorous and graceful things; a genuine love, yet not more genuine than has dwelt in hundreds of men named minor poets: this is the highest quality to be discerned in him.

In this section you will find enclosed a bunch of sub-sections, intended to organize a little bit the huge amount of links we found. This is an utterly great analysis of "Waverly" done by Christophre Rollason. This commentary is fantastic first of all for its aim ; to analyse the Celtic tradition that appear in the novel, and that, according to the author, also play an important role in waverly's education.
