"Go ahead," it says. "See as much as you care toand then some." A world of colored rock, a merciless clarity. Mercy, after all, stone knows nothing of; for that we have each other, or nothingwhich is why our long, difficult climb to the head of Water Canyon and beyond led Nick and me to the trip's high point in more ways than one. Such words may sound philosophical. Yet that plateau of naked rock overlooking the Coloradonow confluent with the Greenmade them real as water and shade. The latter was in short supply. What little we found was cast by one of those erosional pillars called hoodoos, whose noon shadow left our legs and feet fully sunlit. As it was, in response to earth's rotation we had to budge every now and then just to keep our heads and torsos shaded by the skimpy umbrella of its capstone. But we could see all right. Looking out across geological time, we could see the real forever. Nothing philosophical about it. Space too. Hyperclear miles of rock: blond, rust, umber, ocher, sienna, or red, even purpleall getting drilled by electromagnetic radiation called sunlight. Not a cloud. A jet plane soundlessly high left not one wisp of vapor. To any plant wishing for rain, the sky was hopelessly blue. Way east lay that vast panorama's sole grace note: a few pitiful flecks of snow veining couloirs on summits of the Manti-la Sal mountains.

Extractions: One of my favorite books about one of my favorite destinations. This is a collection of brief essays that is the perfect companion for a trip to the Four Corners area and the abounding ruins and sites of the Anazasi. Its not a book detailing where to go and how to get the most for your tourist dollar. Rather its a musing reflection on what its like to visit these places from the perspective of a 21st century traveler. These writings draw our attention to the feelings evoked by the experience... more...
The Georgia Review an excerpt from. Mesa Walk. by reg saner. WHA happened? Comic strip charactersused to say that after having been whapped on the head or knocked for a loop. http://www.uga.edu/garev/summer01/saner.htm
Extractions: HOME SUBSCRIPTIONS SUBMISSIONS STAFF/CONTACT ... OTHER an excerpt from Mesa Walk by Reg Saner "WHA' happened?" Comic strip characters used to say that after having been whapped on the head or knocked for a loop. In Blondie, the ever-late-to-work Dagwood Bumstead would dash headlong out the front door and invariably run smack into the mailman. From my funny-paper days, belly down on our living room rug, head propped in hands while scanning Popeye or Flash Gordon or Terry and the Pirates, the only variant on "wha' happened?" that I recall was, "where am I?" My personal questions, lifelong. Throughout history, approaches to "wha' happened?" and "where am I?" and "why?" have been fenced off in a thousand-and-one different ways as sacred precincts by the world's thousand-and-one religions. Equally well known is the fact that some orthodoxies have taken unamiable, not to say murderous, views of people who dare pursue their own answerson pain of being set afire or torn into small pieces. Trite as citing Galileo's trial may seem, his condemnation illustrates exemplarily well the reciprocity between context and content, and therefore marks the Great Divide between thought control and science. With intuitive accuracy, the Church sensed that a widened knowledge of where we are would change what we are, in ways making its dogmas problematic. And how.

Extractions: The Southwest poses infinite questions for the inquiring mind. That was its lure for alumnus Reg Saner (M.A.'54, Ph.D.'62, English), who never saw a mountain until he was 21 years old. Saner trained at Illinois to be an English scholar, but, under the influence of the Colorado Mountains, he became a writer. The wonder inspired by the mountains has since extended to the Southwestern deserts and canyons that whisper the stories of ancient civilizations. Saner is an Illinois native who thinks fondly both of the state (It's a vast, rich, interesting state.") and his alma mater ("It gave me the excellent scholarly foundation, and I met and married my wife.") However, Colorado and the Southwest became his muse. He is a professor emeritus of English at the University of Colorado in Boulder and has been exploring and writing about the region's mysteries for more than two decades. "The Southwest is narcotic in its allure," says Saner. "Early morning and evening in the desert and its canyons are magical times, but then there's the almost cruel light of midday that won't allow you any illusions. Juniper trees grow against all reason, packrats whose dwellings predate the earliest bipeds by over 20,000 years survive without water, and most rain dries before it touches the ground." As for his home base in Boulder, Saner says, "Not many miles away are the mountains over 14,000 feet high, and hiking up them is like climbing to the end of the world. It causes you to think about your place in the cosmos. It takes you into yourself and out of yourself simultaneously."

Extractions: Seminar in Major Nonfiction Writers Journalkeeping The point of keeping a journal in a college course is to find a way to engage the subject matter of the course over the progress of the semesterin essence, to build on your own encounters with subject matter over an extended period of time. Writers often use journals to record, respond, and rehearsethat is, to record aspects of ones reading (plot, character, theme, language, structure) and ones own writing, to respond to the language and ideas of the reading and aspects of ones own work-in-progress, and to rehearse the language of the reading, either its terminology and expression or its tone and tenor, and the language with which you talk about the reading so that it may surface more readily in your own writing about the reading. Students are forbidden to analyze the style and structure of the preceding passage, but everything else in the course is fair game. We will be reading several works by master nonfictionists and the course outline will indicate when you should write a journal entry on the reading. Generally, I expect a journal entry a week, either in response to specific readings or on perspectives on a writers work as a whole. At the end of the course, when we get a chance to hear people give presentations on topics that are the focus of their major critical paper in the course, your journal entries will advise presenters about revising their papers. In addition, some self-generated entries may also be about your own writing as it emerges in the course, so that
