Extractions: e-Book Highly Recommended I was beginning to fear that we would enter the Third Millennium bound in brass and tradition with nothing to capture the faith and imagination of the world. Vitale, Cardinal Cadini. This is a quote from one of my favorite characters in Chelsea Quinn Yarbros novel MAGNIFICAT. In the real world, of course, what Cadini feared is exactly what happened: despite all the doomsday predictions, the year ticked over with hardly a whimper. But in Yarbros world, the Millennium comes in with a tremendous detonation. The uproar begins in 1997, when the Pope dies and all of the Cardinals, in choosing a new one, twice write a Chinese name unknown to any of them. The Cardinals conclude that this election, however disturbing, must be inspired by the Holy Spirit. It becomes a great deal more disturbing when they discover that the Chinese person, Zhuang Renxin, is a widow, a non-Catholic, and a Communist. But this is only the beginning of the shocks in store for the Cardinals, and the Catholic Church as a whole, in the new millennium. Yarbro is an experienced author, with publishing credits going back to 1978. She has over sixty books in print, and her experience shows. MAGNIFICAT builds smoothly and steadily and holds the readers interest throughout. Yarbro precedes her story with this statement: This is a work of fiction; I made it up. But the premise is consistent with Roman Catholic dogma doctrine and theology.

Susannah is brought on-board, to find a disorienting culture where one has to learn to restrain even his innermost thoughts.
