Extractions: On attendait Sotomayor. On espérait Sotomayor.

Extractions: The Strannik is a congress for professionals such as writers, editors, translators and agents. Among the participants were Russia's leading SF writers such as Boris Strugatsuky, Andrei Stolarov, Vyacheslav Rybakov, Andrei Lazarchuk, and from overseas were Robert Sheckley, Bruce Sterling, Charles N.Brown from America, and two others from Japan. This kind of events are met with high interest in Russia, a country of literature. During the congress, people from TV shows, radio shows, new papers and magazines came to do a cover on the congress and to do interviews on the Russian/American writers. It seemed like Robert Sheckley and Bruce Sterling were constantly doing interviews. The most popular American SF writers in Russia are Robert Sheckley and Ray Bradbury. The congress received much interest owing to Robert Sheckley's attendance. From what I had heard, when Robert Sheckley was stopped by the police on his way to the hotel from the air port, when the police was told that this was Robert Sheckley , they exclaimed "Oh! You are the Sheckley?" and let him through.

Extractions: Front Page National Southern States Other States ... Next By K.P. Mohan EDMONTON, AUG. 8. An emperor was dethroned at the Commonwealth Stadium on Wednesday. A wiry, little Kenyan, who talked in whispers, brought off the biggest coup in distance running. Well after he had accomplished what no other man had in eight years, Kenyan Charles Kamathi hardly seemed to realise the significance of his achievement. Haile Gebrselassie was beaten. On a stage which he had owned since 1993, the monarch of distance running bowed to the extra- ordinary sprinting ability of the 23-year-old Kenyan over the last 150 metres. The 10,000 was the final event of Day 6 at the World athletic Championships and as it finished on a chilly night, a deathly silence seemed to descend on the stadium. Moments earlier there was cacophony all around, with a sizeable batch of Ethiopians cheering to the sound of the drum-beat. In the end, there was just the bronze for Gebrselassie, his Ethiopian team-mate Assefa Mezgebu having sprinted to the silver, behind the Kenyan who looked a mile away. Mezgebu was almost apologetic as he explained how he was able to beat Gebrselassie. ``I go for gold, not go for winning against Haile,'' said Mezgebu, bronze medallist at the Sydney Olympics as well as in Seville. ``I am happy with my silver, happy for myself, but the bronze for Haile...'' Mezgebu allowed that sentence to hang.

Extractions: After a collapse of state publishing in 1987-1989, the industry was in the very beginning of reconstruction. Since then, it has come through two major depressions - because of the slow printing process, and the conservative views of publishers. All good traditions of publishing SF (high-quality translations, well-known old book lines, connections between authors and publishers) were lost in the collapse. The first depression was in 1990-91. Up to this point, there were too many huge state publishing houses that couldn't work without state loans. In time, some of them were privatized, many became jointly-held stock companies, or went bankrupt. And countless new publishing houses were started. These new publishers may be divided into two categories. First: publishers who laundered money for criminal businesses and hidden Party accounts. They published very many books, very quickly, because the main purpose was to circulate cash as fast as possible. The second category is small lone wolves, created often just to publish one or two books before vanishing without a trace; of course, no loans were returned, or taxes paid. And there were two companies organized by SF writers: Text Publishing Co. in Moscow, and Terra Fantastica Publishing House in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). They published books very carefully, dealt with authors' rights correctly (as far as they could, in this new Wild West of business), and tried to publish Russian fiction. All this made their books too expensive, and almost noncompetitive on the market.

Extractions: Chess German Martin Buss pulled off a huge upset when he defeated an array of former champions in the men's high jump to win his first global title at the world championships on Wednesday. Buss, a bronze medallist at the 1999 championships, was the only man to clear 2.36 metres with Russians Yaroslav Rybakov and Vyacheslav Voronin, the 1999 world champion, sharing the silver medal with 2.33 metres. The result was a surprise. The 25-year-old Buss missed last year's Sydney Olympics because of an Achilles tendon operation and had struggled earlier in the season with his form. But the German said: "This is wonderful because I have had such a lousy season. "There was bad weather in Germany earlier in the season and I struggled a bit. I thought it was because I had some injury problems. "But it was all in my head. I went for a few tests at the doctor and he said I was perfectly fit." Buss said he began to think about a place on the podium at his training camp in Calgary just before the championships.

ISCIP - Perspective By vyacheslav IZMAILOV Military Correspondent, Novaya gazeta The trial of Radio Liberty formermembers of the Duma, including Ella Panfilova and Yuli rybakov. http://www.bu.edu/iscip/vol11/Izmailov.html
Extractions: The trial of Radio Liberty correspondent Andrei Babitsky took place on 2-6 October in the court of the Sovetski rayon of Makhachkala. Babitsky was found guilty of knowingly using false documents: to wit, a fake passport under the name of Ali Isa-ogly Masaev. According to the court verdict, he was to pay a fine in the amount of 100 minimum wages (this is slightly more than 8,000 rubles), but was amnestied under a Duma resolution on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Andrei Babitsky could have avoided going to trial by agreeing to accept the amnesty in the course of the investigation conducted by the Russian MVD. But he does not consider himself guilty and we his friends support him in this. He used a passport that was forced on him by the security services (which had also manufactured the fake document) in a very desperate situation in which he had every reason to believe that his life was in danger.
