Extractions: As can be told by previous columns, I'm a bit of a comics junkie. Marc Hempel's Tug and Buster, Steve Bissette's Tyrant, Jhonen Vasquez' Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Roman Dirge's Lenore, and even old issues of Justice League (back from the Giffen/De Mattheis days, when it starred the only Green Lantern ever worth a damn) are enough to keep me going to the local comic shop. However, my personal favorite right now, Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson, does a bit more. Currently published monthly by Vertigo Comics (and also collected in the anthologies "Back on the Street" and the new "Lust For Life"), it's easily the best bit of fun around that doesn't require a can of raw sodium and a YMCA swimming pool. Transmet, as its proponents call it, could be summed up as "Hunter S. Thompson In Space"...by someone who'd never read it. The comic follows the exploits of one Spider Jerusalem, famed outlaw journalist and agent provocateur, as he reports on the world around him. This world is located sometime in our near future, when nanotechnology has transformed Earth's culture, without changing a thing about how mean and vile humanity can be. Followed by a succession of assistants, his long-suffering editor Royce, and his nameless two-faced, three-eyed cat, Spider goes through life demonstrating the power of the press when used by a skilled professional.

The work, of course, is being done in every medium÷out there are zines, comics, pirate TV, websites, you name it. There is an entire world of invisible musicians out there. Most of you zinesters probably know that the punk scene is still active everywhere, but the invisible music scene goes much deeper. There are artists out there who work solely to create subtly-mutating drones or latticeworks of electronic pulsation; artists who coax beauty from unorthodox (sometimes self-invented) instruments such as the Faraway Wind Organ (an ãinstrumentä consisting of a half-mile of telegraph wires keening in the wind); artists devoted to using everyday objects (an oven tray, a Bible) for their neglected instrumental potential; artists who dig up and archive sounds that might otherwise have been lost (pre-WWII gospel songs, or the music that accompanies kiddie rides or ice cream trucks, or field recordings of Vietnamese street musicians); artists of every conceivable stripe who inhabit and color a world that is just out of normal sight.

Extractions: ceriddel@uwo.ca I f you met him at a dinner party, you wouldn't find Paul Needham dressed in black, or speaking in a bellowing drone. He'd rather talk about scuba diving than pipe organ processions and, for the record, burgundy velvet drapes give him the creeps. This upbeat 42-year-old who owns and operates Westview Funeral Chapel defies the misconceptions of funeral directing and says it's a career he wouldn't trade in for any other. Photo by Catherine Riddell Paul Needham stands next to a smaller casket designed for women. "This is a tremendous job in that you're in a position to help people in a horrendously rotten time in their lives. When someone they love dies, I think it's one of the most traumatic things people encounter in a lifetime." He says funeral directors are there to answer people's questions and help guide them through the journey of loss. "I find people are very grateful for what we do. If you help guide them through loss with compassion - and strangely a little bit of humour in the right places here and there - and a knowledgeable guiding hand, there's nothing like it. It's a great job."

Extractions: Reviewed by Paul Freedman Deep Stuff starts out like one of the old morality plays. The central character, John, moves into a new flat with Tasha, Siobhan, Quentin, and Claire. Almost immediately, to their own surprise, they are vigorously discussing moral issues - God, prayer, justice, work, housing. John somehow seems to trigger off this in-built urge to debate and the five find themselves setting aside their Friday evenings for a special meal and a topic to knock about. John, our central character, has a secret in his background. I can't say what - it's spoil the story for you. However, it really does make a huge difference to us when we finally realise where John is coming from and why the discussions - and where they've led - have grown so important to the group. Mike Riddell is the author of Godzone and Alt.spirit@metro.m3 (Alternative Spirituality for the Third Millennium) so we know - or we ought to know- that sooner or later all this moral munching is going to come to a focus. He writes with verve and pace. The characterisations are crisp and credible. The story moves right along and we do too. In the margins, as the young people chew over moral issues (in between bouts of adultery), are notable quotes from luminaries of the ages amplifying the subjects the flat dwellers are discussing.
