    Extractions: The CHARLES B. OLSON YOUNG COMPOSERS CONTEST First Prize: $500 cash award, public performance and compact disc recording by the Encore Wind Ensemble. Contest Rules and Procedures: Entries must be original unpublished compositions for wind ensemble, utilizing standard wind band instrumentation. No transcriptions or arrangements (except those of the composer) will be eligible. The composition may already have been performed, but shall have been written within the past two years. The purpose of the prize is to encourage young composers. Therefore, the compositions must be conceived and constructed by the composer. Entries shall be between 5-8 minutes in length. Compositions must be submitted with a full score. Recordings are welcome but not mandatory. Please do not send parts with your scores. All entries must be received no later than May 1, 2004. Entries received after that date will not be considered. The winning composition will be selected and the composer notified no later than June 10, 2004. Parts for the winning composition must be received no later than August 1, 2004. The winning composition will be recorded live on compact disc at the performance.

Dates: Abstract: The Charles Olson Research Collection contains the literary works, correspondence, photographs, and personal, professional, and family papers of writer and poet Charles Olson. This collection also includes some administrative records of Black Mountain College. Quantity: 130 linear feet. Identification: Charles Olson was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on 27 December 1910, to Karl Joseph and Mary Hines Olson. He attended Wesleyan University where he received a B.A. in 1932 and a M.A. in 1933. He continued his graduate studies at Harvard University from 1936 to 1938. His daughter Katherine was born during his first marriage, to Constance Wilcock. His second marriage, to Elizabeth Kaiser, produced a son, Charles Peter. Elizabeth, or Betty as she was known to her friends, died tragically in a car accident in March 1964. Charles Olson received several prestigious awards during his long career, including two Guggenheim Fellowships, in 1939 and 1948; a Wenner-Gren Foundation grant in 1952; a Longview Foundation award for The Maximus Poems in 1961; and an Oscar Blumenthal Prize (Poetry magazine), 1965. Charles Olson died from cancer on 10 January 1970.

    Extractions: Review by Karl Young Maximus to Gloucester , a collection of letters by Charles Olson to The Gloucester Times , breaks all the standard parameters. In fact, if you set out to produce a book counter to the standard, you probably couldn't go farther than this, even if you invented the author, the publisher, the circumstances of publication. One of the unusual circumstances behind this collection is that the editor of the Times, Paul Kenyon, was sensitive and sympathetic to what Olson was doing. The letters were usually printed in generous format with photos and sidebars. Kenyon did not tamper with Olson's style, sometimes reproducing Olson's typewriter script. This may make the Times uniquely perceptive among American newspapers. How many editors in North America are willing to run letters in any kind of verse, particularly what would be for them a highly eccentric type of poetry (consider, for instance, Olson's habit of leaving sentences unfinished), and to publish them in such generous format? Anastas had an extended local readership in mind when publishing the book. The book's second purpose is to reintroduce Olson to Gloucester, this time as poet. Although Olson knew many people in Gloucester and had more friends there than most people do anywhere, his poetry was generally not read by Gloucesterites, except for the pieces in the

    Extractions: Thomas R. Whitaker It will be most practical to approach Olson after some detailed work with poems by T. S. Eliot Ezra Pound , and William Carlos Williams . Despite many stylistic similarities, Olson's poetic "enactment" dictates a different kind of progression and a different use of literary and other allusions. The teacher might suggest that the formalist concept of a "speaker" or "protagonist" (a character in a poetic drama outside of which the poem's maker is imagined to stand) might be replaced by the poet himself in the act of writing (a self-reflexive Charles Olson in the drama of making this poem). Although Pound's Pisan Cantos , Eliot's Four Quartets , and Williams's Paterson are partially amenable to this approach, Olson commits himself to it more fully in both shorter and longer forms. His abstract style, his refusal to commit himself to the modernist "image," may also be a difficulty. The student can be reminded that all speech, all thought, even an "image," is the result of an abstractive process. Olson characteristically works with syntax and conceptual reference that are "in process"often fragmentary, self-revising, incrementalas he struggles to "say" what is adequate to his present (and always changing) moment. Comparisons with Robert Creeley's often abstract and stammering forward motion may be illuminating.
