I also knew I could hear Him - well, not exactly hear Him, but I knew what He was saying in my heart. I ignored Him for most of my life. I knew that He was calling me but I did not want to know. In 1986, I began to answer the calls, but only because times were hard and I needed Him. He came to my assistance in an unusual way. I had a car accident. At this time He showed me many things. I was in intensive care and very seriously ill. The doctors gave me twenty four hours to live, but I pulled through, much to their amazement. While still in intensive care and very ill, I felt a great pain flow through my body.

I do not know how to describe these in words as there are no created words that could describe something so beautiful that comes from God. I could try, by using such adjectives as 'beautiful, wonderful', but these words are insufficient, as a drop of water is in a vast ocean. Just why Jesus should choose me to bestow these upon, I don't know either. I am just an ordinary person who does ordinary things. I believe in Jesus Christ as a personal God but I am more than content with what He has given me in the Catholic Church, and I find great spiritual comfort in it.

Extractions: Published in trade paperback, February 1997, by Tor Books We burned the Time Machine in Hollywood. Now if life were a movie that would have killed the sequel right there. But, of course, life has endings. Real endings. Some of them are happy. I don't know why I choose to begin here, but, at the time and in that Capital of Sweetened Dreams, it seemed to bring a much needed closure to the craziest year of my life. A year that, summarized, sounds desperately unbelievable, even for a Tabloid headline. "I FELL IN LOVE WITH AN ALIEN, DISCOVERED THE SECRET OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, SAVED THE EARTH FROM WORLD WAR III, AND KILLED MYSELF." As you can imagine, I was tired. My new friend Saul and I stood in the grey basement of a decrepit studio warehouse and watched through the round amber porthole of the incinerator as his invention took on the flames: the distinctly low-tech-looking pallet that had sent us both across the bridge of dreams into the future. Like Rosebud, I thought. It didn't take long to burn, maybe five minutes before the whole contraption crumbled into ashes. It seemed unreal as it happened, and it still does now, as I remember. How strange that something as fixed as the past can surprise us, as if we'd never been there. The way the Intolerable Sinatra of my childhood, braying archly on my dad's Motorola, transformed when I turned forty into the epitome of soul: a thrilling, artful interpreter of middle-aged angst: "How little we know..." That's one of the casualties of Time Travel: continuity. Having stepped out of the flow of time, it seems I've lost the benefit of hindsight. And I find myself in the peculiar position of constantly revisiting my past only to discover it is occupied by a stranger whose behavior is totally unpredictable. It's sort of the opposite of Deja vu.

Chicago's St. Patrick's Day Parade patrick s Day Parade celebration when the Chicago River turns an incredibleshade of Irish green. patrick s Day Parade celebration. http://www.chicagostpatsparade.com/miracle.shtml
Extractions: A modern day miracle occurs each year as part of the St. Patrick's Day Parade celebration when the Chicago River turns an incredible shade of Irish green. This spectacular transformation ranks right up there with the parting of the sea by Moses and the Pyramids of Egypt. For the past 43 years the Chicago River turns green for the St. Patrick's Day Parade celebration. One would ask how this is different from the rest of the year when the river is always a murky shade of green. The difference is both significant and breathtaking because the color green is identical to the greens of Ireland from where it got its name "The Emerald Isle." In 1961 Stephen Bailey was approached by a plumber who was wearing some white coveralls, they knew this only because they could see some of the original color. These coveralls had been mostly stained or dyed a perfect shade of green, an Irish green to better describe it. It was when Stephen Bailey asked how the coveralls got this way, that they discovered that the dye used to detect leaks into the river turned green, not just any color green, but the perfect color green. "A tradition is born" Today this miracle belongs to Mike Butler and his crew, which he claims to always have a little help from a leprechaun who seems to just appear at this time each year.

Extractions: Amazon.com Half.com St. Patrick has become almost synonymous with Irish Christianity. In popular mythology he is held as the only true apostle of Ireland after single-handedly converting the country. Increasingly his authentic writings, the Confession and the Letter to Coroticus, are seen as the only reliable sources on his life. This new, authoritiative translation is accompanied by explanatory notes and Bible references. The introduction gives the background to Patrick the man, the believer, and the missionary. Amazon.com Half.com The plot moves along swiftly, carrying the reader from one adventure to the next. The characters, male and female alike, are strong and complex... Patrick is most intriguing on several levels, and his theology grows naturally and understandably from his experiences. The author's voice never artificially intrudes into the process. Some positions taken are controversial, but the author addresses these choices at the close of the book. Whether or not everyone can agree on every detail, any Celtic, Roman, or Church historian or enthusiast will find plenty of satisfaction reading this incredible tale. If you're looking for a documentary or a theological dissertation, you won't find it in "I, Patrick, a Sinner..." But, if you want to relive ancient history and become acquainted with one of the world's more fascinating personalities, this is the novel to read.

Extractions: PATRICK CAREY Tom Hayes writes about the life and work of Ireland's 'master of the lyrical film' , Patrick Carey who died last year. Last year when Patrick Carey died, it brought a double sadness to his many admirers who knew him and his work. For while we lost one of the greatest film artists Ireland has ever produced, it is also very depressing to discover that his name means nothing to our new generation of film-makers and enthusiasts. Yet through the sixties and early seventies Patrick Carey's short films were among the artistic highlights of Irish life and won international acclaim for this country that remained unmatched in films until very recently. He was Ireland's finest exponent of film as a primary visual art and in his poetically conceived documentaries he pinpointed, for native and foreigner alike, the beauty in the elements that make up the setting for the legendary and ancient history of this ancient island. And so to his Irish films, the first being Yeats Country made for the department of External Affairs which was festooned with awards. First prize "Golden Bear" in Berlin, ditto Gold medal in Barcelona, first prize "Silver Hugo" in Chicago, first prize "Gold Satellite" in Santa Barbara and finally an academy Award nomination in Hollywood. Sadly in those days, money was minimal for film-making in Ireland and Paddy was to say that, "Even though I lost a little money in making it, I felt it was worth it to make such a film."

Religion In America Since 1945; A History; Patrick Allitt patrick Allitt. But patrick Allitt has given us an exceptionally lucidoverview in this humane, witty, and gracefully written volume. http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cup/catalog/data/023112/0231121547.HTM
Extractions: Catholicism and American Freedom: A History "No single book can render the whole landscape of modern American religion. But Patrick Allitt has given us an exceptionally lucid overview in this humane, witty, and gracefully written volume. Approaching religion in the genial spirit of a William James, Allitt seeks less to pass judgment on his subjects than to describe them fairly, and explore their place in the texture of modern American life. The resulting book not only serves as a stimulating introduction to an essential but poorly understood aspect of recent American history. It also kindles our curiosity and wonder at the inexhaustible variety of human thought and experience." The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America "Patrick Allitt has done an enviable job of piecing together a coherent picture of the complex developments that have characterized American religion since World War II. I am especially impressed with his judicious selection of topics. The book is even-handed in its coverage of Protestants, Catholics, and Jews, and is particularly helpful in showing how religious leaders responded to major political events, cultural change, and new technology. Sociologists and political scientists, as well as historians and scholars of religion, will find a lot of valuable information in this book."

Extractions: Welcome! Professional Resources Support Services News Last Updated: Fri, Mar 19, 2004 In recognition of Professor John Patrick's long-term contributions to the improvement of civic education in Indiana schools, Gov. Joseph Kernan named the director of the Social Studies Development Center a Sagamore of the Wabash recipient Dec. 14. The Sagamore is the highest honor paid by the governor to a person in Indiana and is presented to notable men and women who have contributed significantly to the common good of Indiana. The award was presented by Matthew Gutwein, chairman of the Indiana State Bar Associations Citizenship Education Committee. The ISBA honored Patrick at an annual banquet for leaders of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution a curriculum project used in K-12 schools throughout Indiana to teach principles of U.S. constitutional government. Since 1987, Patrick has collaborated with the ISBA to promote the We the People program by introducing it to teachers and students and by conducting professional development conferences and courses to prepare teachers to use these curricular materials successfully. On behalf of the ISBA, Gutwein referred to Patrick as the leading patriarch of the successful civics program and lauded him for his contributions to its successful use in Indiana schools. In a letter from the governor, Kernan stated, The term Sagamore of the Wabash was used by northeastern United States Native Americans to describe a lesser chief or other great person among the tribe to whom the chief would look for wisdom and advice. You, John, certainly fit that description. You have distinguished yourself by your humanity in living, your loyalty in friendship, your wisdom in council and your inspiration in leadership.
