Reissue. (Military/War History) This text refers to the Paperback edition. From the Publisher - Before writing his award-winning Going After Cacciato, Tim O'Brien gave us this searing, intensely personal account of his year as a foot soldier in Vietnam. The author takes us with him to experience combat from behind an infantryman's rifle, to walk the minefields of My Lai, to crawl into the ghostly tunnels, and to explore the ambiguities of manhood and morality in a war gone terribly wrong. Beautifully written and heartfelt, If I Die In A Combat Zone has been hailed as a masterwork of art in its genre.

CNN Correspondent Tim O'Brien discussed the situation from Arlington, Virgina, with CNN Anchor Bill Hemmer on Friday morning. HEMMER: As we have been reporting here, Xerox is the latest corporation now to get caught in a multibillion dollar accounting scandal. There is still, though, plenty of fallout from the WorldCom scandal, a $4 billion wrong number revealed a few days ago. Thousands of employees, about 17,000, seeing pink today, and a few executives there will be getting something else, a congressional subpoena. Today's layoffs are the first in a series that will total about 20,000 of the company's work force worldwide. As we mentioned earlier, that number may go higher. Tim O'Brien is outside one of the company's divisions now in Arlington, Virginia. Good morning.

Time.com People Fortune EW CNN Correspondent Tim O' Brien The Justice Department announced Thursday that it would not seek a breakup of the software giant Microsoft in the still pending antitrust case. CNN Correspondent Tim O' Brien discusses the decision and its impact with CNN Anchor Leon Harris. LEON HARRIS : What have you found? TIM O'BRIEN: Well, it's kind of a mixed bag, but certainly more good news than bad for Microsoft. You are correct, the Department of Justice the antitrust division says it's not going to pursue the breakup of Microsoft as it had originally, nor will it peruse that tie-in claim that Microsoft had unlawfully tied its Web browser to its operating system. They were an essential part of its case initially, and a district judge did rule in the government's favor on both of those counts. But as you may recall, the court of appeals reversed. The Justice Department said today it is quite satisfied with the court of appeals ruling. After all, the court of appeals did find that Microsoft had engaged in a broad pattern of antitrust violations aimed to keep out the competition. It's going to pursue that claim in the district court.

CNNfn correspondent Tim O'Brien explains the decision. CNN: What happened in today's ruling? O'BRIEN: You'll recall [that] last June a federal appeals court found Microsoft guilty of antitrust violations and ordered the case back to a lower court to determine what the remedy should be. Microsoft is appealing that decision right now to the U.S. Supreme Court and it has asked the appeals court for a stay, to put its previous decision on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court decides if it wants to get into this fray. This is not really a ruling on the merits at all; it merely allows the case to go back to a lower court while the Supreme Court decides whether to get involved.

Foremost is the antiwar movement of tens of millions of ordinary citizens, a movement in which Vietnam veterans and active-duty soldiers eventually played a decisive role. The other major achievement is the literature produced by the war, a literature of which Vietnam veterans have become the formative creators. Among the scores of important Vietnam-veteran writers are such fine poets as Bruce Weigl, John Balaban, W. D. Ehrhart, Marilyn McMahon, and Yusef Komunyakaa (winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for poetry); playwrights and filmwriters like David Rabe and Oliver Stone; and fiction writers as diverse as Larry Heinemann (winner of the 1987 National Book Award for Paco's Story ), Tobias Wolff, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Gustav Hasford (author of the novel on which the film Full Metal Jacket was based), Stephen Wright, David Huddle, Wayne Karlin, Philip Caputo, James Crumley, Winston Groom (author of

Gordon Gee: Before I introduce Mr. O'Brien, I want to applaud the work of Beth Taylor, one of our rising faculty stars, for organizing this conference (applause) - I didn't even get the words out, Beth, before they applauded - congratulations! Ladies and gentlemen, when I pondered how to start this evening, I had to ask myself the question, which I think, in my business, one often does ask, and that is how does one introduce an acclaimed writer like Tim O'Brien - what does one say about any writer is probably the question. We might say that writers are single-minded and focused, living in their imaginations with the companionship of a host of fictional characters. We may say that they are driven by their craft to give life to this imagination, ideas creating story-truths, as Tim O'Brien calls them, so that we might see the happening-truths, as he says, in a different light. The lesson we learn from talented writers like Tim O'Brien is that writing is a passion; done well, I would submit to you that writing is an art, and Tim O'Brien has proven that he is, indeed

Extractions: Tim O'Brien, renowned for his award-winning Vietnam War fiction, turns his gaze upon a different war in his new novel: the war of the sexes. The results are at once hilarious and touchingly sad. The narrator of Tomcat in Love is Thomas Chippering, a deluded, self-justifying, egomaniacal womanizer who refuses to move on with his life after his wife leaves him. Instead, he embarks upon a journey of revenge while simultaneously trying to bed every woman he meets. Mr. Chippering reveals the extent of his dementia at one point by saying, "There can be little on this earth more fundamentally satisfying than a piece of intelligently conceived, impeccably executed vengeance." Despite the incessant humor of the book, it is a serious novel that examines the lengths we will go to in the pursuit of love.

Extractions: writing programming web design contact ... yahoo! Tim O'Brien wants to set the record straight: he is not a Vietnam writer. "It's like calling Toni Morrison a black writer or Joseph Conrad an ocean writer or Shakespeare a royalty writer," says O'Brien on the phone in early October from Massachusetts, where he is poised on the verge of a massive publicity barrage for his highly anticipated new novel, In the Lake of the Woods . "I don't write about bombs and bullets, I write about the human heart. It's just the subject matter that was given to me. "If I were to tag In the Lake of the Woods ," says O'Brien in his characteristic shy mumble, "I'd call it a love story." A love story? It seems difficult to believe, given that O'Brien's two most famous books, the mystical Going After Cacciato and its counterpart, The Things They Carried , both won critical praise for their vivid depictions of soldiers humping through the Asian subcontinent. Not to mention that his first book, the nonfictional If I Die in a Combat Zone , detailed the author's own experiences as a gun-toting grunt in Vietnam.
