It is wealth of knowledge that makes O'Brian's novels about early nineteenth century naval life so gripping. Born in 1914, Patrick O'Brian spent his early years in Ireland, England and France. Despite frequent periods of illnesses, which were given over to endless reading, he soon made an acquaintance with the sea. A family friend's barque-rigged merchantman, converted into an ocean-going yacht, allowed him to learn to hand, reef and steer in the tradition of the great sailing ships of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Start with his Master and Commander , the beginning of a series which is approaching 20 volumes. Any good library should have them all. Things I like about it: Good action and plotting. The setting is the British Navy starting in 1805, and it's a page-turner to compete with Forester's Hornblower novels or any of the modern Ludlum types.. But in the real Navy, it wasn't a constant string of naval battles-the action is in proportion, with the occasional frenzy of action punctuating long periods of outward calm or intrigue. Deep meaning at many levels. The inner thoughts of the characters range to surprising areas. I think O'Brian can compete with Jane Austen in literary resonance with, and reflection on, the complexities of life. Authenticity. Lots of people have gotten the historical props right-sailing technology and jargon is well documented. But what really boggles my mind is that the characters (and the narrator) all talk and think in the language of the times. I used to read the oldest books I could find, and to the extent that I have an ear for the authentic speech of the period, the O'Brian books ring true. Character. The two main characters develop steadily and realistically through the series, but O'Brian can make a lot of the minor characters breathe and grow too. In particular, the women are real-not cardboard cutouts. There is one actual 19th century Wild Woman woven through the series, and she is quite interesting.

Like Post Captain, Reverse of the Medal takes place mostly on land but it is as far-removed as it can be from that romantic-comedy interval. We get to see a fascinating glimpse of the London underworld and the legal processes of the time and Jack Aubrey in adversity is an impressive sight. He bears his misfortune with stoic dignity and the respect in which he is held by all he has served with comes to his rescue in his blackest moment. The climax of the book is one of the most powerful and moving passages I have ever read and made me realise how much I had come to care about these characters. Wonderful O'Brian piece about Sanguine Innocence Lost.
