The Work Of William Morris The Work of william morris. by John House. 1996 saw the centenary of the death of william morris. william morris has increasingly http://www.worldcollectorsnet.com/magazine/issue3/iss3p4.html
Extractions: 1996 saw the centenary of the death of William Morris. William Morris has increasingly become a household name and as the father-figure of the Arts and Crafts movement has had a great impact on 20th century design. He was the first to champion such art and craft principles as "truth to materials" and simplicity in art. This simplistic nature was also seen in his attitude towards life where he propagated an ideal of rustic living. His utopian socialism beliefs and his affinity for natural, hand-crafted details made him the spiritual leader of the Crafts Revival of the 20th century. William Morris was born into a wealthy local pottery family on March 24, 1834, at Elm House, Walthamstow. He was the third of nine children (and the oldest son) of William and Emma Shelton Morris. In his childhood Morris showed a great passion for all things medieval and a great affinity with nature. In 1847, Morris's father died, and the following year, aged fourteen, he entered Marlborough College. He left in 1851 to continue to study at home. In 1853 Morris entered Exeter College at Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones, who was to become one of the greatest of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, and began to study architecture and write poetry. In 1856 Morris began work in an architects office where he met Philip Webb, who would become another close friend and associate. He took rooms with Burne-Jones, already embarked on his career as an artist, and before the end of the year Morris himself abandoned architecture for art.

Halewood lies approximately seven miles south of Liverpool bordering on to the greenbelt. It was part of Lancashire until 1974 when the boundaries were altered and it became part of Merseyside in the newly formed Borough of Knowsley. At present we are in a position to start on our Development Plan for the church, which includes renovation and protection of our William Morris windows The Building Fund currently stands at around £22,000 but we need to raise approximately £300,000 to fully repair and re-order the church. The people of Halewood love and treasure their church and we will restore it to its former glory to be a central focal point in the life of the community of our area. Extractions: Back to Cases Making a claim Our Approach Resources Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court Case No. 9705-03957 Jesse Williams was a 67-year-old African-American retired school custodian who died of lung cancer in 1997 after smoking Marlboro cigarettes for 47 years. A simple and devoted family man, Jesse raised his six children in inner city Portland and was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Philip Morris Incorporated is the domestic tobacco subsidiary corporation of Philip Morris Companies, Inc. As a corporate entity, Philip Morris knew from the early 1950's that its cigarettes were addictive and caused cancer, but denied both consistently and vehemently up until and including the trial of this case, February 22 - March 31, 1999. The defendant told the 12-person jury that the case was about Jesse Williams, the choices he made and his personal responsibility. Plaintiff, in response, admitted comparative fault (in a modified comparative fault state) but asked the jury to determine whether Philip Morris shared that fault and to apportion it between the multi-billion dollar corporation and its customer (who, according to Philip Morris, acted unreasonably in purchasing, using and continuing to use its products and in not accepting the "common knowledge" that cigarettes are addictive and cause cancer - two bits of "common knowledge" that Philip Morris itself was unwilling to accept). The jury found Jesse Williams and Philip Morris equally at fault and awarded $800,000 in compensatory damages. In addition, the jury found that Philip Morris was guilty of common law fraud for its 50 years of lies and awarded $79.5 million in punitive damages. The amount of punitive damages was reduced to $32 million by the trial judge and both sides have appealed the case to the Oregon Court of Appeals.
