And me perhaps each of these dispositions, as the subject was whereon I entered, may have at other times variously affected; and likely might in these foremost expressions now also disclose which of them swayed most, but that the very attempt of this address thus made, and the thought of whom it hath recourse to, hath got the power within me to a passion, far more welcome than incidental to a preface. Nevertheless there being three principal things, without which all praising is but courtship and flattery: First, when that only is praised which is solidly worth praise: next, when greatest likelihoods are brought that such things are truly and really in those persons to whom they are ascribed: the other, when he who praises, by showing that such his actual persuasion is of whom he writes, can demonstrate that he flatters not; the former two of these I have heretofore endeavoured, rescuing the employment from him who went about to impair your merits with a trivial and malignant encomium; the latter as belonging chiefly to mine own acquittal, that whom I so extolled I did not flatter, hath been reserved opportunely to this occasion.

Extractions: John Milton was born in London in 1608 at the height of the Protestant Reformation in England. His father was a law writer who had achieved some success by the time Milton was born. This prosperity afforded Milton an excellent education, first with private tutoring, then a private school, and finally Cambridge. Milton, a studious boy, excelled in languages and classical studies. His father had left Roman Catholicism and Milton was raised Protestant, with a heavy tendency toward Puritanism. As a student, he wanted to go into the ministry, but was disillusioned with the scholastic elements of the clergy at Cambridge. Cambridge, however, afforded him time to write poetry. After Cambridge, he continued his studies for seven years in a leisurely life at his father's house. It was here that he wrote some of his first published poems, including "Comus" (1634) and "Lycidas" (1638), both of which he published in 1645. Milton toured the European continent in 1638-1639 and met many of the great Renaissance minds, including Galileo and Grotius. The beginning of the Puritan Revolution found Milton back in England, fighting for a more humanist and reformed church. For more than twenty years, Milton set aside poetry to write political and religious pamphlets for the cause of Puritanism. For a time, he served as Secretary for Foreign Tongues under Cromwell.

The St John Ambulance Brigade was first formed in England in 1887 to give first aid coverage to Queen Victoria's Silver Jubilee parade. Our presence at local and community events continues this tradition, and furthers the work of St. John Ambulance in promoting safety and public first aid. Some of the ways the Brigade in Canada have helped the community in the past 125 years are summarized in this short video (may require RealPlayer plugin). The St. John Ambulance Brigade is a historical name, and synonymous with St. John Ambulance Community Service, and so the two terms are often used interchangeably. There are more than 600 St. John Ambulance Brigade Divisions in Canada, each one serving a specific community or providing a specific service. The modern St. John Ambulance Community Services include: Search and Rescue Youth leaders Youth members (Ages 6-17) Therapy Dog members The Halton Hills Patient Care Division 928 The Halton Hills Patient Care Division serves all of North Halton, including the towns of Georgetown, Acton, and Milton, by training volunteers to provide first aid services at fall fairs, sports events, parades, special events, and any other public gathering. Volunteer members may also be invited to assist at events in neighbouring divisions. In 2002, Halton Hills St. John Ambulance volunteers gave over 6000 hours of community service.

Extractions: 8 November 1674 In 1629 (when he was 21 years old) he wrote a short poem, "On the morning of Christ's Nativity," his first memorable work, still widely read at Christmas. A few years later, he wrote a masque (or mask), which was presented in 1634, at Ludlow Castle, near the Welsh border, in honor of the Earl of Bridgewater. In August 1637, a classmate of Milton's, Edward King, who had written some poetry himself, was drowned, and several of his friends resolved to write poems in his memory and publish a collection of them. Milton was asked to contribute. His poem was called Lycidas Between 1641 and 1660, Milton wrote almost no poetry. This was the time when the English Puritans were setting out to overthrow the English monarchy on the grounds that it was levying taxes unlawfully (and was, moreover, in league with the wicked English Church), and to overthrow the English Church on the grounds that, while nominally breaking with Rome, it had retained many Romish customs, such as white gowns for the clergy (instead of the black gowns worn by Puritan clergy, which were obviously more seemly) and that the English Church was therefore just as bad as the Church or Rome (and was, moreover, in league with the wicked English monarchy). Milton believed wholeheartedly in the Puritan cause, and set aside his poetry to write pamphlets in defense of various aspects of liberty as he saw it. Extractions: home artists John Corigliano first came to prominence after winning the chamber music prize at the 1964 Spoleto Festival for his "Sonata for Violin and Piano." "Symphony No. 1," Corigliano's impassioned personal response to the AIDS crisis, was written for the Chicago Symphony where he was composer-in-residence from 1987 to 1990. For this work he was awarded the 1991 Grawemeyer Award music's Nobel Prize as well as two Grammy Awards for "Best Contemporary Composition of 1991" and "Best Orchestral Performance of the Year." In 1991, Corigliano was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Music at Lehman College, City University of New York, and is on the faculty of the Julliard School. Mr Linton studied filmmaking at SUNY Binghamton before pursuing a career in music. In 1983, he received his first dance score commissions from Karole Armitage and Steven Petronio, among others. He received a "Bessie" award in 1985 and 1986 for two of his scores, and his work was heard in an episode of PBS' "Alive From Off-Center." At the end of 1986, Neutral Records released Linton's debut solo LP, "Orchsography." In 1987, he was awarded an NYFA Fellowship for his work with visual artist Anthoney Silvestrini.

He was originally destined to a ministerial career, but his independent spirit led him to "prefer a blameless silence before the sacred office of speaking bought and begun with servitude and forswearing." He spent five quiet years at Horton in Buckinghamshire, reading and writing. To this period belong and Il Penseroso, Arcades, Comus , and Lycidas, all breathing the lofty spirit of his religious convictions. In 1638 and 1639 he traveled on the continent, coming into contact with such men as Grotius, Galileo, and Lucas Holete (q.v.), but was recalled by a rumor of the outbreak of the armed struggle for liberty at home. The next twenty years of his life were devoted almost entirely to prose work in the service of the Puritan cause. In 1641 and 1642 appeared his tractates Of Reformation touching Church Discipline in England, Of Prelatical Episcopacy, the two defenses of Smectymnuus, and The Reason of Church Government Urged against Prelaty. With frequent passages of real eloquence lighting up the rough controversial style of the period, and with a wide knowledge of ecclesiastical antiquity, he struck weighty blows at the intolerant High-church party which seemed to dominate the Church of England. The ill-success of his first marriage, with the daughter of a Royalist squire in Oxfordshire, who left him in a month, led him to write four tracts dealing with divorce, the first entitled The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce

Z (1) William Selby Harney Soldier, convert; b. near Haysboro, Tennessee, U.S.A., 27 August, 1800; d. at St. Louis, Missouri, 9 May, 1889. Appointed to U.S. army, 13 Feb., 1818, he served in the Black Hawk and Florida Indian wars, and with gallantry in the conflict with Mexico, after which he was made a brigardier-general. He then had command in the far west during the Sioux troubles of 1855 and there became the friend and admirer of the famous missionary, Father J.B. DeSmet, S.J., who was of great assistance to him in making peace. Having seized San Juan Island near Vancouver in 1858, a dispute with England over the Oregon boundary line followed his action. When the Civil War broke out he was in charge of the Department of the West at St. Louis, and while en route to Washington was captured and held prisoner for a short time by the Confederates. A brevet promotion as major-general for long and faithful services followed his retirement 1 August, 1863. (2) John Milton Harney Brother of foregoing, b. in Delaware, 9 March, 1789; d. at Somerset, Kentucky, 15 January, 1825. Their father, Thomas Harney, was an officer in the Revolutionary war. John Harney studied medicine and settled in Kentucky. After a visit to Europe he accepted an appointment in the navy and spent several years in South America. On his return he edited a paper, became a Catholic, joined the Dominicans, then beginning their mission in Kentucky, and died in their ranks. He was the author of a number of poems printed in various magazines.
