FFWD Weekly:July 9th, 1998 BOOKS by Catherine Radimer. The Tracey Fragments by maureen medved House of Anansi Press, 149 pp. I m so happy. Have an amazing life. http://www.ffwdweekly.com/Issues/1998/0709/book1.html
Extractions: House of Anansi Press, 149 pp. "I'm so happy. Have an amazing life. Now I'm going to scratch my eyes out." Maureen Medved gets in your face with the first paragraph and stays there until the last word. This is raw, angry, explosive writing at its very best. It captures the chaotic angst of a teenage girl on the street without getting bogged down by the baggage that usually comes with that voice. Tracey (aka "the girl with no tits") sits wrapped in an old shower curtain at the back of a bus, during a blizzard, telling stories that shatter against each other, leaving little standing at the end. She creates an autobiography out of delusion, panic and self-contempt, but it is an autobiography in which the center keeps shifting. The "real" Tracey deliberately eludes definition, offering conflicting fragments instead of a whole. There is the street-smart teen bragging about her boyfriend, Billy Speed; the loser she calls "It" who is mocked by her peers; the daughter of parents who are too scared to leave the house; the sister to Sonny who she hypnotized into thinking he's a dog; the granddaughter of a whore raped by a Polish horseman; the rebel; the lunatic; and the scared child. Each Tracey has a story that contradicts the others, and each story is true to the Tracey who tells it. While this may sound like yet another book of postmodern drivel, there is a difference: The Tracey Fragments has substance. Instead of indulging in theoretical navel-gazing in the guise of a novel, Medved has actually written a book that rings truer than the sum of its parts. What seems ridiculous or histrionic when taken out of context, comes across as genuine when read on its own terms. It is a challenging book well worth the effort.

Anansi $18.95 Reviewed by Laurie Kruk Conventions of gender, of genre, are cast off like last century's corsets by four Canadian women writers who give the daughter voice within three novels and a story collection. These authors re-invent the real by poking holes in the realist-based Canadian House of Fiction, allowing more light to sweep the basement, clearing away some of this century's shadows: the casting out of unwed mothers; abuse of girls, especially sexual; the betrayal of innocence. Three of the four pose pointed questions about the meaning, coherence and potential happiness of contemporary life. Only Simmons Niven risks a "happy ending," via magical intervention and feminist fantasy. Two of these novels ( A Fine Daughter, The Tracey Fragments

Unfortunately these moments don't counterbalance the book's flaws. Medved goes for the jugular a little too often, clubbing the reader with the DRAMA of a particular moment with clumsy tricks like all capital letters. The protagonist, Tracey Berkowitz, is definitely having a rough time. The adults are out to get her, her little brother has disappeared, her break with virginity is highly unpleasant. The problem is that after a while the relentlessness of her suffering makes for a boring read. A little black humor would go a long way toward making The Tracey Fragments more interesting. (EC) Girls on the Verge: Debutante Dips, Gang Drive-bys, and Other Initiations St. Martin's Press, 170 pages. In Girls on the Verge , Vendela Vida sets out to chronicle various female coming-of-age rituals on the eve of the millennium. Vida casts a wide net to explore the transition between childhood and adulthood, with vignettes that range from hanging out with the Crips to posing as a frat bunny. Sometimes this net is a little too wide, notably in the case of the Burning Man chapter, which veers away from the book's female focus.
