Jahrhundert stammenden verfasst. Goethe sagte über diese "Mailänder Geschichte aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert", in der zwei einfache Brautleute von einem ruchlosen Feudalherrn an der Heirat gehindert werden, dass der Roman "alles überflügelt, was wir in dieser Art kennen". Das Werk, ein Klassiker der Weltliteratur, trug in deutschen Übersetzungen bisher gewöhnlich den Titel "Die Verlobten". Jetzt liegt im Hanser Verlag (München) eine von Burkhart Kroeber besorgte neue Übertragung unter dem Titel "Die Brautleute" vor (915 S., DM 58,). Der Übersetzer, der auch einen Kommentarteil und ein Nachwort beisteuerte, wollte mit seinem neuen Eindeutschungsversuch zeigen, "wie wenig verstaubt, wie spannungsreich und in seinen Bildsequenzen oft geradezu filmisch Manzonis Roman ist".
