In "Eve's Apology," this portion of the poem is spoken from the point of view of Pontius Pilate's wife, who is begging for the life of Christ. She explores who really bares the guilt in original sin. She is passionate, yet uses reason in her argument (something women were not thought cabable of doing) and makes her point that any guilt all women may bear in original sin will be far overshadowed by the guilt men, in turn, may bear for Pilate's order to execute Christ. In addition, in "To the Virtuous Reader", Lanyer states that her purpose in writing is to praise women, and to make it known that they are not all lazy, gossiping, lecherous, deceitful, or stupid as most men of the time supposed. She includes a list of virtuous women to encourage and praise other women to use them as exemplum. If you are interested at all in a female writer's perspective on Renaissance ideas, I highly recommend Aeilia Lanyer's beautiful poetry.

Extractions: We know the basic outline of Aemilia Lanyer life: she born Aemilia Bassano to Baptist Bassano and his common law wife, Margaret Johnson, in 1569. Her father, a court musician who died in 1576 when she was 7, left her 100 pound dowry in his will. Her mother died in 1587. She became mistress to Henry Cary, Lord Hundson, Queen Elizabeth's Lord Chamberlain but married Alfonso Lanyer, musician to the Queen, in October, 1592 when she became pregnant with Cary's child. Henry Lanyer was born in early 1593. She was widowed in 1613 and thereafter lived with her now-grown son. In an era when most educated women were satisfied to translate other people's works, at a time when the witchcraft trials were at their peak, Lanyer produced an extraordinary 2000+ line poem on biblical stories focusing on the Passion of Christ. She freely reinterpreted scripture in a woman-friendly fashion. Considering that it is generous to call her background middle class, her achievement is truly extraordinary. About 100 lines of the approximately 2000 line poem refers to the creation story. Lanyer reinterprets the story of the Fall by reframing it as part of the Passion of Christ. Pilate represents all men just as Eve represents all women. To her, if Pilate condemns Jesus, women will be freed of the curse of the fall because man's sin in participating if the suffering and death of the Savior will be much greater than woman's sin in eating of the tree of knowledge.

Aemilia Lanyer, Biographical Introduction aemilia lanyer. Biographical Introduction. aemilia lanyer was the daughterof Baptista Basano and Margaret Johnson, his commonlaw wife. http://www.usask.ca/english/phoenix/lanyerbio.htm
Extractions: Biographical Introduction Much of what information is available on Lanyer's life comes from the records of Simon Forman, an astrologer whom she consulted during 1597. Forman's diary indicates that Lanyer was concerned about promotion to knighthood for her husband, who was serving as a soldier at the time (Woods 213). Forman also documents Lanyer's problem with miscarriages, as well as her missing the enjoyment of Queen Elizabeth's court. In his notes, Forman claims that Lanyer's need for his advice, coupled with her financial difficulties, led her to allow him some sort of familiarity. The implication that Forman was involved with Lanyer sexually is exaggerated, according to Woods and Greer, although he undoubtedly had that aim. Woods also refutes claim of historian A. L. Rowse that Lanyer was William Shakespeare's "dark lady," arguing that the notion comes from a misreading of Forman's diaries. No documentary evidence indicates Shakespeare and Lanyer knew one another. Aemilia Lanyer published her only known volume of poems, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum (Hail God, King of the Jews), in 1611. The book is remarkable both because women poets rarely published in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, and because of its groundbreaking women's perspective on religious issues. As Lewalski says, it "is a vigorous apologia for women's equality or superiority to men in spiritual and moral matters" (203). Lanyer was seeking support through patronage with the publication of the work, specifically female patronage. There is some suggestion "that the nine dedications to the volume may have been written in expectation of the usual 2 [pounds] per dedication" (Greer 45). The desired funding was not forthcoming.

Extractions: Much of the information available about Lanyer's life comes from the casebooks of the astrologer Simon Forman whom Lanyer consulted about her husband's prospects for promotion. Forman tried, unsuccessfully, to seduce Lanyer. Many of his comments are deformed by jealousy and pique and must, therefore, be used as sources advisedly. Data for reconstructing Lanyer's life come also from parish records and government documents. This biography draws principally on Greer, Hastings, Medoff, and Sansone; Lewalski (various); Rowse ( The Poems of Shakespeare 's Dark Lady ); and Woods ( Dictionary of Literary Biography ). For full references and other resources (including others cited parenthetically below), consult Bibliography Aemilia Lanyer was christened at St. Botolph, Bishopsgatethe London neighborhood where "foreign musicians and theatre-folk lived"on January 27, 1569 (Rowse 13). She was the daughter of Baptista Bassano and Margaret Johnson. Nothing certain is known of Lanyer's mother but that she was buried in Bishopsgate on July 7, 1587 (Rowse 14). But it is possible that she was the Margaret Johnson born ca. 1545-1550 who was the aunt of Robert Johnson (1583?-1633), lutenist and composer, musician of Shakespeare 's company, and, later, musician to the court of Charles I (
