Extractions: Born around 1028, William was the illegitimate son of Duke Robert I of Normandy, and Herleve (also known as Arlette), daughter of a tanner in Falaise. Known as 'William the Bastard' to his contemporaries, his illegitimacy shaped his career when he was young. On his father's death in 1035, William was recognised by his family as the heir - an exception to the general rule that illegitimacy barred succession. His great uncle looked after the Duchy during William's minority, and his overlord, King Henry I of France, knighted him at the age of 15. From 1047 onwards, William successfully dealt with rebellion inside Normandy involving his kinsmen and threats from neighbouring nobles, including attempted invasions by his former ally King Henry I of France in 1054 (the French forces were defeated at the Battle of Mortemer) and 1057. William's military successes and reputation helped him to negotiate his marriage to Mathilda, daughter of Count Baldwin V of Flanders. At the time of his invasion of England, William was a very experienced and ruthless military commander, ruler and administrator who had unified Normandy and inspired fear and respect outside his duchy. William's claim to the English throne was based on his assertion that, in 1051, Edward the Confessor had promised him the throne (he was a distant cousin) and that Harold II - having sworn in 1064 to uphold William's right to succeed to that throne - was therefore a usurper. Furthermore, William had the support of Emperor Henry IV and papal approval. William took seven months to prepare his invasion force, using some 600 transport ships to carry around 7,000 men (including 2,000-3,000 cavalry) across the Channel. On 28 September 1066, with a favourable wind, William landed unopposed at Pevensey and, within a few days, raised fortifications at Hastings. Having defeated an earlier invasion by the King of Norway at the Battle of Stamford Bridge near York in late September, Harold undertook a forced march south, covering 250 miles in some nine days to meet the new threat, gathering inexperienced reinforcements to replenish his exhausted veterans as he marched.

Extractions: References The subject of this essay will probably seem strange, from one point of view or another, to most readers. For start, it advocates a kind of socialist economic organization that is anti-government. As most people use the term "socialism," that would seem to be a contradiction in terms. In order to find the basic ideas of anti-government socialism, we have to go back to the period before the Russian Revolution of 1917, when some schools of socialist thought were quite close to anarchism. Guild Socialism was one of these. If that doesn't bother you, and some economic jargon about labor-managed enterprises sounds natural to you,then you can skip this preface without missing anything. Nevertheless, as I reread the paper that follows, I realize that it is not really a very good introduction to Guild Socialism. (It wasn't written to be an introduction to those ideas, but it is the nearest thing to it that I have in my files). My purpose in this fairly extensive preface is to fill in some of those blanks and to explain "where I am coming from." The Guild Socialists were active mostly in Britain in about 1890-1920. Their idea was that each workplace should be a more or less sovereign political jurisdiction and a democratic one, so that the supervisors would be elected by the people they supervise and the directors of the company be elected on a basis of one person, one vote. A workplace is a place where a group of people work together to produce some distinct good or service for sale or for the use of society. Most workplaces are small by political standards, and "workplace" implies a particular locality, not a world-wide financial empire. In making the workplace a basic political jurisdiction, the Guild Socialists linked themselves with others who wanted politics "closer to the people" in small, decentralized political units: anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists, many Christian Socialists and cooperators.

His formal education was limited, ending at the age of 13. An enterprising nature compensated for his lack of schooling. Beginning work in a Topsham sawmill, he became the largest ship owner in Maine and a successful merchant. King also owned extensive real estate, was a principal owner of Maine's first cotton mill in Brunswick, and was a founder and president of Bath's first bank. Active in local politics beginning in 1795, he served in Massachusetts General Court, representing Topsham in 1795 and 1799 and Bath in 1804. He served twice as state senator for Lincoln County, from 1807 to 1811 and 1818 to 1819. During the War of 1812 he served as major general in the militia and provided recruiting assistance as a colonel in the United States Army. As a major shipper, he directed much of his attention to protecting the coastal and marine trade. In 1813, King began the effort for which he is best remembered. Residents of Maine had suffered hardships during the war and petitioned Massachusetts for separation. King worked for seven years and statehood for Maine was granted in 1820.
