Her most famous work is her short story "The Lottery", which combines a bucolic small-town-America setting with a horrific shock ending. The tone of most of her works is odd and macabre, with an impending sense of doom, often framed by very ordinary settings and characters. Born in San Francisco California , she graduated from Syracuse University in . While a student there, she met future husband Stanley Edgar Hyman , who was to become a noted literary critic. In addition to her novels , Jackson also wrote a children's novel, Nine Magic Wishes, available in an edition illustrated by her grandson Miles Hyman . She also wrote two humorous memoirs, Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages, about her marriage and the experience of bringing up four children . After her death, her husband released her final unfinished novel, Come Along With Me

At Roosevelt High School, Jackson attended accelerated programs in both math and science, and she graduated in 1964 as valedictorian. Jackson began classes at MIT that same year, one of fewer than twenty African American students and the only one studying theoretical physics. While a student she did volunteer work at Boston City Hospital and tutored students at the Roxbury YMCA. She earned her bachelors degree in 1968, writing her thesis on solid-state physics, a subject then in the forefront of theoretical physics. Although accepted at Brown, Harvard, and the University of Chicago, Jackson decided to stay at MIT for her doctoral work, because she wanted to encourage more African American students to attend the institution. She worked on elementary particle theory for her Ph.D., which she completed in 1973. Her research was directed by James Young, the first African American tenured full professor in MIT's physics department. Arriving on MIT's campus with an eager young mind in the fall of 1964, Jackson immediately suffered vicious treatment from those not interested in seeing someone of her race and gender be the first to achieve anything. Ostracized by students who would not even sit next to her in class, Jackson was forced to do all the work in isolation that everyone else did in supportive study groups. One faculty member told her to go "learn a trade." And while simply trying to walk down the street, Jackson was shouted at and spat upon. Once, in downtown Boston, someone even shot at her. Turnaround Artist The suffering Jackson endured would have caused many others to retreat into an angry obscurity, but in a typically thoughtful manner, she made a key decision that has served her well, echoing through the rest of her life. She realized that since she was going to stand out so much, and her actions would be well remembered, she could turn the scrutiny to her advantage and make an indelible impression of excellence. Relying on a strong internal compass from that moment on, Jackson held herself to the highest standards of both intellect and decency, and soon the world took notice. Before long, the same students who had shunned Jackson were seeking her out for help and mentoring, and she obliged.
