My travels began during my senior year in high school when I lived in Hanau, Germany, and attended the Karl Reibahn Gymnasium as an American Field Service school year program exchange student. My college undergraduate work was completed at Bucknell University . An unusual program at Bucknell allowed me to complete both my BS and MS in chemistry concurrently. Before I finished college, I was married to a young officer in the Navy. The Navy years brought us travel to San Diego, Jacksonville, Tokyo, Virginia Beach, and finally Washington DC. Along the way we had two wonderful children, Brian (born in Florida) and Shelly (born in Tokyo). Each duty station change brought new job opportunities for me. In San Diego, I worked as a research assistant in immunochemistry. In Jacksonville, my work at Glidden Organics as a research chemist resulted in a US patent. In Japan, I first began my career in education as an English teacher for Japanese professionals. Back in the states, I continued teaching chemistry at a community college (Virginia Beach), university (Washington DC) and eventually secondary school (Fairfax County, Raleigh, and Memphis).

She was having a book signing at the mall bookstore. I'm a sucker for an autograph so I had to stop and look. I discovered that not only is Ms Irving a local author, but her books are even set in Ottawa. Better yet, she writes mystery novels (my favourite genre) with a female protagonist. The store only had the first two Katy Klein Mysteries in paperback so I bought those. I read the first one fairly soon thereafter and enjoyed it. The second one sat on my shelf waiting as a treat for a time when I needed a quick, fun read. That time came last week when I realized that I had only two weeks to read and review a book for this month's issue. Katy Klein is far from your typical mystery detective. She is a Jewish Astrologer and former Psychologist. Jupiter's Daughter starts with Katy at her friend's gala Christmas party. Katy meets Marion and her abusive husband Phil. Marion dies shortly thereafter and Katy takes in her runaway daughter, Rose. Things go from bad to worse around Katy when Marion's boss is murdered and Rose dies from complications of a miscarriage. Katy's friend spirals into an alcoholic binge and Katy comes under attack from a fanatical religious group, her office 'slumlord' and Rose's father.

Contrary to popular belief, while it does get pretty darn chilly here in the winter, it is also a steambath in the summer. I have American friends who have a hard time believing this, but it is true, I swear. If you visit in July, please don't bring your skis. It will only cause the natives to point and laugh at you. My House in Ottawa Y'all come by and see me sometime, y'hear? (Sorry about the yellowing lawn, but it was a dry summer last year.) Yes, we have our very own Changing of the Guard ceremony, just like the Queen's. Cool, huh? And just in case turn-of-the-last-century neo-Gothic archways and flying buttresses weren't incongruous enough in a North American capital city, take a gander at our faux-French-Chateau style CN hotel. Ottawa really does have it all! This photo was shot from the Ottawa River, where it meets the locks of the Rideau Canal, not to be confused with the Rideau River. All these waterways make navigation fun, and confuse the heck out of the tourists. Tulips upon tulips upon tulips....in May, we celebrate winter's demise with the Festival of Spring. Sixty zillion tulips courtesy of the Dutch Royal Family, who were sheltered here during the Second World War. In the background is the National Art Gallery, a froth of glass and metal designed by Moishe Safdie, architect extraordinaire. If you like this one, you should see what he did to our poor old City Hall!

It's ruled death my natural causes, but Katy's not so sure. Soon after, a second party attendee dies, and police begin to look at a relative of the second victim as the prime suspect. Katy has doubts about the choice of suspect, and decides to do a bit of investigating on her own. Complicating things is Katy's best friend who has been acting very strangely, and Katy's daughter, who has befriended the daughter of the first victim. Grab this book and settle down...you won't want to move until this book is done! The characters are unique, likeable and interesting. The plot moves along well, with just enough twists and turns to keep it exciting without being farfetched. The story was a wonderful mixture of mystery, humour and touching moments. This is the second novel in the series, and I hope that Karen keeps them coming!
