Extractions: Joan Hall Hovey is also a writing instructor. Writing gives me a sense of achievement and satisfaction that nothing else does. (Except having my babies.) And that's not a bad analogy, if not an original one. Holding your published book in your hands, (especially that first one), running your fingers over its smooth cover, tracing your name there is heady stuff! For me, a dream come true. I know that I am truly blessed to be permitted to work every day a what I most love and need to do. I think you appreciate it even more when you've had to go to those awful 9 to 5 jobs you hated, because the bills have to be paid. And I've had my share of them over the years hulling strawberries, waiting tables, grading eggs... (top that one). A couple of those jobs have left scars. I've been stalked by a psychotic customer when I was selling 'CAA'. (Canada's version of 'AAA'.) I've been chased around the desk by a so-called pillar of society while working as a secretary. But while I wouldn't want to repeat it, I wouldn't take back a single moment of any of it. All is 'grist' for the writer's mill. The next best thing is hearing from my readers. You have been so generous in your comments, so kind to take the time in your own busy lives to write to me. Telling me that my novels kept you up all night, or that you couldn't put the book down was music to my ears, and keep me going in the dark times that come to most writers, while I find my way about in the unknown, unlit territory of this next book.

Extractions: 296 pages Very highly recommended Written with the finesse and grace of a master, Joan Hall Hovey's first novel, LISTEN To THE SHADOWS, is an engrossing tale of fear and danger certain to keep the reader awake, turning pages long after bed time, and listening carefully to everything around them. A man without a conscious stalks artist Katie Summers. She hasn't seen him, but she senses his presence. A tingling on the back of the neck, a flicker out of the corner of the eye, and an instinctual awareness of danger are her only warnings. Stood up by her date late one night, Katie leaves the restaurant alone to drive through a storm to her remote country home. She doesn't notice the headlights following her. But when she does glance in the rearview mirror, the sight of a dead man's sightless blue eyes staring back at her results in a nearly fatal accident. She doesn't know, as she lies unconscious and bleeding, with her car crushed by a telephone pole, that her stalker lurks close by, watching. After four days in a coma, Katie awakens in the hospital. There she meets Dr Johnathan Shea, a sexy, vibrant, man carrying a heavy load of guilt over the loss of a young patient. A romantic interest develops, spiced by fierce attraction, sexy intrigue and danger. But the question remains as to whether he will be enough to protect Katie from a madman.

Extractions: Interview Joan Hall Hovey by Jessica Davies 1. What was it that made you take that first step to making your writing public? From a very young age I knew I wanted to be a writer. Ive always considered myself a storyteller. I loved making up stories to entertain classmates and if I could scare the pants off them, so much the better. In some ways, I was shy and insecure, so this was a great way to gain approval. I also liked being the center of attention. Its a real power trip to keep your peers on the edge of their collective seats. I wanted to join the ranks of those authors who had given me so much pleasure, and in turn entertain my own readers. 2. Listening to stories from your parents sparked your imagination. Do you credit this to unlocking your writing passion? Have any of those stories, in any shape or form, appeared in your books? Yes, theres no doubt that those stories sparked my imagination. Everything you experience in life effects the way you develop as a writer. I also loved the movies, especially anything scaryzombie pictures, Bella Lagose, Boris Karloff. I devoured the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Phyllis Whitney, Shirley Jacksontheyve all play a part in the kind of things I would later find delicious to write about. Many of my life experience have found their way into my books, in one way or another, disguised or undisguised. Its inevitable. 3. I've noticed that you also enjoy acting and have been in a number of plays. How did that come about?

Extractions: I was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, situated on the Bay of Fundy, which flows into the chill Atlantic. Sense of place has influenced my writing in ways I'm sure I'm not even aware of, as sense of place must influence any writer, as well as the time and circumstance in which he or she grew up. But mainly I think I lived a good deal inside my own head, and in the pages of wonderful books. I was a good student, especially in English and composition, but did spend a fair amount of time staring out the classroom window, to the dismay of my teachers. I enjoyed, and do today, walking on the beach and listening to the waves wash up on the shore. The water brings peace to my soul and quiets my mind. What new things are happening for you in 2004? What new projects are in the works? It's been a good year in a number of ways. It was lovely to have Chill Waters nominated for the Bloody Dagger Award, and have it come in third place. I'm doing a narrating project right now that's dear to my heart - a series of short stories for an excellent writer. I'm working on the new novel with the working title
