Lacking conscious artistry or literary pretention, his writing is noted for the brilliant intellect it reveals. Hazlitt's childhood was spent in Ireland and North America, where his father, a Unitarian preacher, supported the American rebels. The family returned to England when William was nine, settling in Shropshire. At puberty the child became somewhat sullen and unapproachable, tendencies that persisted throughout his life. He read intensively, however, laying the foundation of his learning. Having some difficulty in expressing himself either in conversation or in writing, he turned to painting and in 1802 traveled to Paris to work in the Louvre, though war between England and France compelled his return the following year. His friends, who already included Charles Lamb, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, encouraged his ambitions as a painter; yet in 1805 he turned to metaphysics and the study of philosophy that had attracted him earlier, publishing his first book, On the Principles of Human Action.

Robert Southey
Abstract Born in Bristol in 1774. After his father's death an uncle sent him to Westminster School but he was expelled in 1792 after denouncing flogging in the school magazine. In 1795 Southey married Edith Fricker, whose elder sister, Sara Fricker, married Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In 1813 Robert Southey was appointed poet laureate. Southey was criticised by Lord Byron and william hazlitt who accused him of betraying his political principles for money. Southey wrote several books between 1824 and 1835. He died in 1843.

Extractions: "At the outset of life . . . our imagination has a body to it"so wrote William Hazlitt (1778-1831), with his genius for aphorism, in "My First Acquaintance with Poets" (1823). That autobiographical essay relates two experiences that shaped the body of his own imagination in 1798 (17-116). The first occurred in January, when, himself the son of a Dissenting minister from Shropshire and preparing for the Dissenting ministry, he met Samuel Taylor Coleridge , who had come to Shrewsbury to take charge of the Unitarian congregation. "That my understanding . . . found a language to express itself," he acknowledged, "I owe to Coleridge" (107). The second occurred when Hazlitt visited Coleridge and William Wordsworth in Somerset that June. There, amid three weeks of intense conversation, Hazlitt heard them read from the volume of poetry they were preparing, Lyrical Ballads "and the sense of a new style and a new spirit in poetry came over me" (117). But impressive as these events undoubtedly were, there were still larger forces at work on the body of Hazlitt's imagination, as he makes clear in "On the Feeling of Immortality in Youth" (1827): "I set out in life with the French Revolution, and that event had considerable influence on my early feelings" (17:196-97). Between 1798 and 1827, in becoming one of the most lively and trenchant cultural critics ever to write in English, Hazlitt never failed to imagine those he wrote about, or to see himself, as inhabitants of a world in which social forces shaped subjectivity. Abstract Established in 1809 as a Tory rival to the Whig supporting Edinburgh Review, the idea for the journal came from Sir Walter Scott. The Quarterly Review stood politically for preserving the status quo. The journal was very hostile to the work of writers in favour of political reform. Writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley, Leigh Hunt, william hazlitt, Thomas Babington Macaulay and Charles Dickens all received hostile reviews in the journal, whereas the work of Jane Austin and Sir Walter Scott was warmly praised. It was alleged that John Wilson Croker's savage review of John Keat's Endymion contributed to the poet's early death. The Quarterly Review ceased publication in 1967.

The separation between his parents did not prevent him from being on affectionate terms wii,h both of them. He early began to writa for the Morning Chronicle, and in 1833 married Caroline Reynell. He was the author of many translations, chiefly from the French, and of some works on the law of bankruptcy. He was called-to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1844, and became registrar in the court of bankruptcy. He held this position for more than thirty years, retiring two years before his death, which took place at Addlestone, Surrey, on the 23rd of February 1893. Hazlitts grandson, WILLIAM CAREW HAZLITT, the bibliographer, was born on the 22nd of August 1834. He was educated at the Merchant Taylors school and was called to the bar of the Inner Temple in 1861. Among his many l)Ub]icatiOns may be noted his invaluable Handbook to the Popular, Poetical and Dramatic Literature of Great Britain, from the Invention of Printing to the Restoration (1867), supplemented in 1876, 1882, 1887 and 1889, a General Index by J. G. Gray appearing in 1893. He published further contributions to the subject in Bibliographical Collections and Notes on Early English Literature made during the years 1893I 903 (1903), and a Manual for the Collector and Amateur of Old English Plays. . . (1892). He was the chief editor of the useful 1871 edition of Wartons History of English Poetry, and compiled the Catalogue of the Huth Library (1880).
