Jessica Hagedorn's "Dream Jungle" October 10, 2003. jessica hagedorn s Dream Jungle . 0938 PM Manila Time A Different Breed The lady does it again. This time it s called Dream Jungle. http://houseonahill.net/archives/2003/10/000623.html
Extractions: The lady does it again . This time it's called Dream Jungle . I don't have a copy yet but there is a very good preview in The Washington Post . A bored mestizo with more money than he knows what to with, a chambermaid who escapes from his advances to become a prostitute, a "lost tribe", a disillusioned American actor and, in the background, the rise and fall of the Marcoses. Carolyn See writes : I think if I read correctly that in "Dream Jungle" Hagedorn is trying to delineate the Filipino "character," a character that has never been imprinted by what we conventionally might think of as "morality" their Catholicism is too recent and too tainted by the greed of the Spanish conquerors. I think the author is trying to show a society where people do what they must, or what they want to do, whatever comes first, without any hint of regret or sorrow or illusion... ...as in so many examples of colonization, who ends up conquering whom?... ...the Philippines go on, in all their complexity. Because of their geographic location, conquerors will forever lust after them. But it's possible that the islands' population will go on living "jungle dreams," visions the outside world can't begin to imagine. Hagedorn's style is oblique, but it utterly suits her subject.

Extractions: Bloghopping brought me to a recent article by Jessica Hagedorn in Time magazine. From there I went on to read We Who Stayed Behind by F. Sionil Jose I think it fitting that I should write about people like Hagedorn and Jose todaythe eve of Ferdinand Marcos' birth anniversary; the eve of the second anniversary of the Twin Towers bombing. Jessica Tarahata moved to the U.S. at the age of 13 with her mother and brothers after her parents separated. Homesick, angry and confused, she found solace in writing and watching movies. Those lonely times would eventually lead her to professional success Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn had been in the United States for only three years (after moving from the Philippines at age thirteen) when her poems caught the attention of Kenneth Rexroth. Rexroth, a San Francisco-based artist, encouraged her to hone her writing and edited the book that first featured her poetry, Four Young Women (1973). Forged in the heat of the early 1970s ethnic revival, her early forays into poetry, playwriting, and short fiction employed the psychedelic and rebellious idioms particular to that period. Anthologized in Mountain Moving Day (1973), Third World Women (1973), and Time to Greez! (1975), she soon produced her first collection of poetry and fiction, Dangerous Music (1975). While in San Francisco, Hagedorn took acting lessons and subsequently developed an interest in the performing arts that was to steer her into multimedia work. Her experience as a lyricist for a band configured her poetry as one of effect and rhythm, proving congenial to her interest in interpretive readings and theater, After Joseph Papp produced her collaboration with Thulani Davis and Ntozake Shange, Where the Mississippi Meets the Amazon (1977), she moved to New York to work as a playwright and musician, involvements that stamped her poetry with distinctively performative strains. Papp produced her first play, Mango Tango, in 1978. She then mounted a score of productions in New York, from Tenement Lover (1981) to Holy Food (theater: 1988; radio: 1989), as well as one in San Francisco, Teenytown (1990).

Extractions: by Jessica Hagedorn From Publishers Weekly Vincent Moody appears, a captivating but aptly named film celebrity who abandons his girlfriend and son in California to star in a big Vietnam-era blockbuster, Napalm Sunset (think Apocalypse Now). When he stumbles upon Lina at a joint called the Love Connection, he falls for her, and makes her part of the film's entourage. Meanwhile, Paz Marlowe, a Filipino-American journalist with social ties to Zamora's family, returns to Manila to attend her mother's funeral and to unravel the inconsistencies in accounts of Zamora's discovery. With the addition of each narrative thread, Hagedorn deconstructs Zamora's story, revealing the corruption of a regime capable of orchestrating the discovery of a new tribe as part of a public relations coup. Hagedorn hits some notes too hard, but her storytelling is sensuous and vivid and her characters are cunningly imagined; she offers a telling glimpse of the imposing American presence, both physical and cultural, in the Philippines. -
Miromi: Jessica Hagedorn :: Dogeaters July 29, 2002. jessica hagedorn Dogeaters. dogeaters. jessica hagedorn Dogeaters. We compare notes after the movie, sipping http://www.miromi.org/mt/db/000054.html
Extractions: We compare notes after the movie, sipping our TruColas under the watchful gaze of the taciturn servant Lorenza. I dont like her face, Pucha complains about Jane Wyman, I hate when Rock starts kissing her! Whats wrong with it? I want to know, irritated by my blond cousins constant criticisms. She wrinkles her mestiza nose, the nose she is so proud of because its so pointy and straight. AY! Que corny! I dunno what Rock sees in her she wails. Its a love story, I say in my driest tone of voice. Although Im four years younger than Pucha, I always feel older. Its a corny love story, when you think about it, Pucha snorts. Being corny is the worst sin you can commit in her eyes. What about Gloria Talbot? You liked her, didnt you? Shes so...I search frantically through my limited vocabulary for just the right adjective to describe my feline heroineinteresting. Pucha rolls her eyes. AY! Puwede ba, you have weird taste! Shes really cara de achay, if you ask me. She purses her lips to emphasize her distaste, comparing the starlet to an ugly servant without, as usual, giving a thought to Lorenzas presence. I avoid Lorenzas eyes. She looks like a catthats why shes so strange and interesting, I go on, hating my cousin for being four years older than me, for being so blond, fair-skinned, and cruel. Pucha laughs in disdain. She looks like a cat, aw-right, she says, with her thick, singsong accent. But if you ask me, prima, Gloria Talbot looks like a trapo. And whats more, Kim Noval shouldve been in this movie instead of Jane Wyman. Janes too old, Pucha sighs. Pobre Rock! Everytime he had to kiss her Pucha shudders at the thought. Her breasts, which are already an overdeveloped 36B and still growing, jiggle under her ruffled blouse.

Jessica Hagedorn : : Dogeaters jessica hagedorn, From Dogeaters Love Letters 1956. The airconditioned darkness of the Avenue Theater smells of flowery pomade, sugary http://www.geocities.com/icasocot/hagedorn_dogeaters.html
Extractions: 1956. The air-conditioned darkness of the Avenue Theater smells of flowery pomade, sugary chocolates, cigarette smoke, and sweat. All That Heaven Allows is playing in Cinemascope and Technicolor. Starring Jane Wyman as the rich widow, Rock Hudson as the handsome young gardener, and Agnes Moorehead as Janes faithful friend, the movie also features the unsung starlet Gloria Talbot as Janes spoiled teenage daughter, a feisty brunette with catlike features and an innocent ponytail. Rock Hudsons rustic gardeners cottage stands next to a frozen lake. The sky is a garish baby-blue, the clouds are ethereal wads of fluffy white cotton. In this perfect picture-book American tableau, plaid hunting jackets, roaring cellophane fires, smoking chimneys, and stark winter forests of skeletal trees provide costume and setting for Hollywoods version of a typical rural Christmas. Huddles with our chaperone Lorenza, my cousin Pucha Gonzaga and I sit enthralled in the upper section of the balcony in Manilas Foremost! First-Run! English Movies Only! Theater, ignoring the furtive lovers stealing noisy kisses in the pitch-black darkness all around us. Jane Wymans soft putty face. Rock Hudsons singular, pitying expression. Flared skirts, wide cinch belts, prim white blouses, a single strand of delicate, blue-white pearls. Thick penciled eyebrows and blood-red vampire lips; the virginal, pastel-pink cashmere cardigan draped over Gloria Talbots shoulders. Cousin Pucha and I are impressed by her brash style; we gasp at Glorias cool indifference, the offhand way she treats her grieving mother. Her casual arrogance seems inherently American, modern, and enviable.
