SF Reviews Crescent City Rhapsody By Kathleen Ann Goonan Crescent City Rhapsody. Copyright 2000 by kathleen ann goonan. SOJALSrating Good (2/5). I first read this in September 2001. Marie http://www.sfreviews.com/docs/Kathleen Ann Goonan_2000_Crescent City Rhapsody.ht
Extractions: Get the Newsletter SOJALS rating Good (2/5) I first read this in September 2001. Marie Laveau business tycoon and on her way to becoming Voudoun Queen of New Orleans is assassinated. But that's OK, they have the technology, they can rebuild her. Of course, it's a slow and painful process. But she'll recover and find her killers and they'll also undergo something of a slow and painful process. Meanwhile, world-wide, a massive electromagnetic pulse stops all radio transmission, wrecking computers, communication equipment and power distribution. After a few hours the pulse fades, but returns later more frequently and with increasing duration. And since the pulses seem to be of alien origin rather than natural phenomena, the government aim to contain and control the information and the knowledge that may lead from it, using as governments usually do, any means necessary. Zeb is one of the few who detected an underlying signal to the first electromagnetic. In the government's view he holds important information and his silence must be assured. All over the world children are born whose biochemistry is uniquely sensitive to these electromagnetic silences.

Extractions: The Bones of Time The Bones of Time opens with two tragic losses and ends in too much of a wham-bam hurry. The prologue is set in 1887, as Kaiulani Cleghorn, the last princess of Hawaii, witnesses the slow death of her mother, who has taken to her bed as if she has simply lost the will to live an affliction that was apparently common at the time of the American annexation of the islands. A holy man, a kahuna, has cursed her mother, and now he curses Kaiulani, too: to a visionary talent that will have repercussions 150 years later. The story jumps to the 2030s, when Lynn Oshima, daughter of the head of the powerful and inevitably sinister corporation Interspace, miscarries the baby whose father she had selected from a catalogue. Recovering, Lynn is given the chance to fly to Hong Kong to collect a sample of Chairman Mao's genetic material. It's tempting she already has Lenin, Indira Ghandi, Teddy Roosevelt and a job lot of ayatollahs in her collection but it's risky, too. Anything her brothers arrange for her to do is likely to be risky. And usually illegal.
Light Music By Kathleen Ann Goonan - An Infinity Plus Review by kathleen ann goonan. So I probably won t be tracking down kathleen ann goonan sback catalogue, but I can see why she s so widely regarded in SF circles. http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/lightmusic.htm
Extractions: Light Music I'm one of those people those few, few people who readily admits to having tried, and failed, to read Kathleen Ann Goonan's debut novel, Queen City Jazz . In view of the critical acclaim she's received since then, I felt it was my duty to give Goonan another go, and while I finished this one, I still found it a struggle. The thing is, Light Music isn't bad far from it it's just overwritten. Unnecessarily wordy, prone to digression, reminiscent of the early excesses of Stephen King. Nothing that couldn't be remedied by having an editor go through and take out roughly every fourth word, but the upshot was that I found it all too easy to put the book down and walk away every 30 pages or so, which made for somewhat disjointed reading. It also follows the literary vogue of using nanotechnology as the New Magic, something that tends to irk me, if not actually annoy me. I hope Goonan's legions of fans will therefore forgive me if it appears that I've Missed The Point. Thankfully for novice Goonan readers

In our humble opinion, typos show that the logs are of *live* chats, not canned interviews, and minimal editing of these logs has taken place. Extractions: In the latter part of the twenty-first century, nanotechnology is about to take man into the next evolutionary leap. Then continous, mysterious, and unstoppable signals from space created The Silence, a state where radios, television and the net were inoperable. Crescent City was created in the Caribbean Sea, a sentient life form meant to be a repository of all human knowledge. Crescent City will one day turn itself into a space ship but before that could happen, pirates attack and destroy the coordinates needed to take the ship to its proper destination. Jason Peabody and Dania leave Crescent City for Johnson Space Station in Houston where they can retrieve the coordinates the city so desperately needs. Their journey through a world altered by nanotechnology and decimated by plague is the stuff of legends. On one level, a person has to be a super genius to understand all the scientific concepts put forth in LIGHT MUSIC. On the other hand, if the readers are willing to let their imaginations flow freely, they will enjoy a fascinating story line populated with characters that are all too human despite their genetic differences. Kathleen Ann Goonan is a writer on the cutting edge of literature.

It is possible, therefore, our fictional impulses being so opposite, that we may arrive together at something clear-eyed and straightforward, the way two negative numbers multiplied together produce a positive value. If this happens it will be by accident. It is not my intention. I will go so far as to say I would consider it a disappointment." You can read this book for the sheer pleasure of the language, the effortless and continuously delightful narrative flow, the deeply ironic tone reminiscent of great American humorists such as Thurber and Parker, and the charming, lovingly (but not sentimentally) told tale of the town of Magrit, Minnesota, in 1947, when the boys were supposed to come home from the war and marry the girls they'd left behind. Except that they didn't come home to Magrit. Or if they did it was only to touch down restlessly in this place which embodied the spirit of the past, where already, beneath the surface, changes were taking place. The story: Margaret Mills was started at the turn of the century by Henry Collins, an ambitious businessman who was attracted to Magrit and the idea of manufacturing breakfast cereal by an omen. "Breakfast cereal was the wilderness, first tamed, and then eaten. It was family, it was America, it was a wholesome and American alternative to grain's other uses, a point that Henry made clear in his 1906 pamphlet
