It hasn't quite dawned on many Americans just how big this issue could be. Gay marriage is an awkward and polarizing subject. Neither the public, politicians, nor the media are eager to take it up. Yet there's a dynamic built into this issue that makes it likely to have an explosive impact on the coming campaign. But the trouble for Kerry and the Democrats doesn't end there. The media firestorm over gay marriage is going to continue through the entire campaign (and beyond). This country has never confronted a situation in which the marriages of a substantial body of citizens go unrecognized in large parts of the country. What happens if someone in a same-sex marriage is injured in a non-recognizing state? Will his spouse get hospital visitation rights? What if a marriage dissolves, and property in a non-recognizing state has to be divided? Complications will proliferate, and each new permutation will mean more news stories and more pleas for national recognition. Although gay-marriage advocates will undoubtedly litigate aggressively to nationalize their Massachusetts victory, it is likely that the politically savvy managers of the gay-marriage movement will try to delay formal legal challenges until after the presidential campaign. They may or may not succeed. Couples could quickly launch challenges of their own to federal and state DOMAs (Defense of Marriage Acts). In any case, there will surely be a continuous stream of news stories about gay marriage, featuring pleas by newly married couples for recognition in their home states.

    Extractions: In the early eighteenth century in London there existed "molly houses," pubs where gay men gathered to sing and dance and have a good time, and make assignations with one another. In some of these molly houses there were "Marrying Rooms" and "Chapels" in which the men sometimes went to be "married" or "wedded"; often this merely consisted of them having sex together, sometimes in full sight of the company in the other large room of the tavern. There were also semi-formal bondings, and we know of at least half a dozen male couples who lived together for long periods, often years, including male couples who operated their own molly houses. But as far as I can discover, no duly ordained minister officiated at these ceremonies until the early nineteenth century, when the Reverend John Church appeared upon the molly circuit and began celebrating the first gay rites of Holy Matrimony. John Church's origins are obscure. He was found, sometime between 1782—1784, when but an infant who could barely toddle, on the steps of the Church of St John's in Clerkenwell (or, by another account, the Church of St Andrew in Holborn). Unable to locate his parents, the elders of the parish church sent him to the Foundling Hospital, where the nurses took him in hand and gave him the appropriate name "John Church". Johnnie came out at an early age. When he was only nine years old, the good nurses became alarmed at discovering that he was playing forbidden games with the other orphan boys. The Governors of this worthy institution thought "that it was prudent to apprentice him out at that early age, to obviate the possibility of the contagioun [

Under such a master he was likely to form a taste for poetry. Being born without prospect of hereditary riches he was sent to London in his youth and placed apprentice with a silk-mercer.  How long he continued behind the counter, or with what degree of softness and dexterity he received and accommodated the Ladies, as he probably took no delight in telling it, is not known. The report is that he was soon weary of either the restraint or servility of his occupation, and easily persuaded his master to discharge him.    The dutchess of Monmouth, remarkable for inflexible perseverance in her demand to be treated as a princess, in 1712 took Gay into her service as secretary: by quitting a shop for such service he might gain leisure, but he certainly advanced little in the boast of independence. Of his leisure he made so good use that he published next year a poem on Rural Sports, and inscribed it to Mr. Pope, who was then rising fast into reputation. Pope was pleased with the honour; and when he became acquainted with Gay found such attractions in his manners and conversation that he seems to have received him into his inmost confidence, and a friendship was formed between them which lasted to their separation by death, without any known abatement on either part. Gay was the general favourite of the whole association of wits; but they regarded him as a play-fellow rather than a partner, and treated him with more fondness than respect.
