    Extractions: By Mary Gaitskill Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" is built on the idea that sex is a dark, chaotic, destructive force. This is a poor foundation, though not because the idea is wrong exactly; sex can be all of the above. But sex is too primary, too deep and too big for the idea; what makes it most destructive and violent is part of what makes it creative and intensely loving. How these opposed qualities interact in each of us is complicated and tender and strange it goes all the way down to the bottom of us, the part we can't see into. It's easy to be scared of what you can't see, but it's a little kid who thinks that because he's afraid of the dark, the dark is therefore evil. "Eyes Wide Shut" has one strong early scene: A wife tells her husband of a moment some years past when a handsome young man simply glanced at her, and she was so inflamed that she would've thrown away her marriage for one night with him had the opportunity been there. That a complete stranger could arouse such a forceful primary response in her is scary for the characters and poignant for the viewer, poignant because it depicts how the underlayer of her unconscious what we can't see is at odds with the rational top layer of her life, creating an incongruity that might be funny or awful or both. At that point the movie is involving; we recognize the dilemma and want to see how it will play out.

In his supercilious dismissal of this whimsical idea, Nabokov described his characters as "galley slaves" a comment exuding the playful, haughty spirit that drove (and still drives) some critics nuts. Such critics condemn Nabokov's authorial voice as elitist, inhuman and finally cruel. And that is an assessment his "slaves" might well agree with, subjected as they were to excruciating and ridiculous fates delineated in exquisite language and sparkling, albeit twisted, comic narratives. To a reader with a defensive turn of mind who is waiting to be told how to live or to be shown the Truth in a piece of fiction, the ruthless and rigorous complexity of Nabokov's work may seem cruel simply because it does not offer either of these services. Some readers apparently interpret the very beauty of his prose as cruel and there is a hyper-refinement, an airy, curiously high-pitched quality to its beauty that can feel cruel simply because it throws the whole beastly, mundane, plodding corporeality of human beings into such grotesque relief. Through this Apollonian oeuvre there frolic countless tiny nymphets most famously, Lolita Haze, with her dim eyes and big, bright mouth, her narrow-shouldered, hipless, insouciant grace. And therein also stump Mrs. Haze and her 30-ish sisters, with their gross emotional needs, their dumpy legs, their ghastly hips and boobs, the unbeautiful human personified with a fastidious shudder.

There was an extra kid on the bus, a 6-year-old named Christopher with no place to go could we take him, too? There was no pressure, she said. We had 10 minutes to decide. This is the way it all began almost two years ago. It is a story I did not intend to write; I didn't use a tape recorder or take detailed notes. But I did keep a journal, and I have so obsessively rethought the depicted events for so long that while I've occasionally doubted my character, I don't doubt my memory. My recollection of what people said and the exact way in which they said it is inevitably imperfect, but I believe it is accurate in substance. Some months after we submitted our application, the charity's local chairman came to interview us. We gave her three personal references. She asked us if we'd ever been convicted of child abuse. We said no. I asked if we would be able to meet the child's parents. She looked at me quizzically. Why would you want to do that? she asked. Because it would make a connection between home and here. Because it would make the child feel safer to see that his mother was still in charge. Because I trailed off; she was looking at me strangely.

Privacy is sacrificed to get at "the truth" about both intimacy and the potential life has for the playful (and in particular for the sexually playful) to be extended into adulthood. But sex, in Gaitskill's world, is mischievous, cerebral, brutal, or even described with an almost dainty candour, the one thing it is not is sexy.
