The latter, which has been produced in England occasionally since the 1950s, is considered to be among Firbank's major works, and yet it, like the other two plays, has not been generally available in this country until this edition was published. During his brief career he achieved some recognition as an innovator in satiric dialogue and narrative techniques. His books reflect his own legendary, eccentric, if not personal life, with all its bizarre characters and laced with sophisticated wit. He wrote such novels as Vainglory Inclinations Caprice Valmouth ) and The Flower Beneath the Foot ), but his most famous is probably Prancing Nigger (1924) which was originally published in England as Sorrow in Sunlight . His last novel, The Artificial Princess , although written circa 1915 was released posthumously in 1934. He is one of those British authors who apparently became strongly influenced by the writings of Aleister Crowley, but very little survives to tell of the full extent of their relationship. Since Ronald Firbank wrote many stories it is only fair to ask if he ever used Aleister Crowley as a model for any characters in his novels. This is difficult to ascertain. We do know that in his first novel, Vainglory But nowhere in this novel is there a character which has any direct bearing on the life of Crowley.

Though all his books appeared between the years 1915 and 1926, his true affinities were with the epoch of Wilde, Beardsley and The Yellow Book . It's been said that Firbank's work appeals only to a select few, even though it was the fruit of an intellectual playboy. After Uppingham , Firbank spent time at Tours and Madrid, considering the diplomatic service before plumping for Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He sat no examinations and left the University, degree-less, after two-and-a-half years. Firbank joined the Roman Catholic church, after realising that the appeal was more aesthetic than theological. In Italy, France, North Africa and the West Indies, Firbank was an enthusiastic traveller and fond of smart society. Yet all the time he was shy, in the manner of sensitive young men who are insensitively pitched into the heartier sort of public school. From 1915, Firbank's novels appeared about once a year, all characterised by archness and evasiveness - the very antheses of the public school spirit. No wonder he has appealed to aesthetes and posh renegades, plus other "Midlands Roughs" like Joe Orton.
