Findley became quite successful as an actor, even acting alongside Sir Alec Guinness at the Stratford Festival in the 1950s. In fact, it was not until he became friends with the actress Ruth Gordon that Findley even considered writing as a vocation. It was after his first short story was published in The Tamarack Review , that Gordon was able to convince him that he should give up acting and concentrate on writing fiction. Findley's first success as a novelist, however, did not come in Canada. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. This all changed, however, with The Wars (1977). Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Since then he has published five more novels, each helping to establish his reputation as one of Canada's most popular and beloved novelists.

Despite his family's misgivings, he began to study dance and later, with considerable success, acting. Both remained lifelong friends with Findley, and convinced him that his true vocation lay in writing. At the time of Timothy Findley's birth his family were having financial difficulties, although they were living in a large house in the wealthiest neighbourhood of Toronto. I don't talk about it. Nothing is ever plotted along the lines of any given theory because that would kill the writing. Then you're writing for another reason. And you have to force your storyline and force your characters into a mold. And why do that? You've killed half the impetus of what writing is about. Which is about exploring. Exploration. You're exploring the people you write and they develop under your hand and become whole." The first time I interviewed Timothy Findley was in 1995 while he was promoting his splendid novel, The Piano Man's Daughter . Findley took the opportunity to introduce me to a lovely white Zinfandel. A Californian. As crisp as the late summer day was hot and so lovely on the palate, it melted: if a wine can be said to melt. At our most recent meeting, Findley introduced me to another lovely wine. We were in the lounge of the Hotel Vancouver (the last bastion of civilized smoking in that city. And Findley did rather a lot of that.) and he pressed a glass of an astonishing Australian red on me from his own decanter. "Wolf Blass," he intoned as only Findley can intone. "Don't forget to ask for 'Yellow Label'."

Time Summary The novel opens with a man known only as Pilgrim hanging himself in London in 1912. Despite being pronounced dead by two physicians, he somehow lives. Pilgrim has attempted suicide many times before but is seemingly unable to die. He claims to have endured life for thousands of years but has tired of living and only longs for death. He has crossed paths with many historical figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Saint Teresa, Oscar Wilde, and Auguste Rodin. After his most recent suicide attempt, he is admitted to a psychiatric facility in Zurich as a patient of the famous Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung. Pilgrim eventually escapes from the institution and masterminds the successful theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. Next, he sets the cathedral at Chartres on fire. The novel ends with Pilgrim driving a car into a river on the eve of World War I. His body is never found.
