I started SFRevu as a forum for my reviews which I tend to write more of than can find outlets for. Having been an editor ( Sci-Fi Talk Frequencies ), I fully understand the space limitations publications suffer, but often after I finish my word allotment I still have a lot I want to say about a book. Course Handouts and Links Introduction Stories of "made" intelligences certainly go back as far as the ancient tales of the golem and Mary Shelleys Frankenstein , and our reading for this summer certainly draws power from those earlier tales. Science Fiction is often called a "literature of ideas," to distinguish it from other genres where aesthetic and formal concerns are more important. Accordingly, while we will look at aesthetic and formal differences between these texts and mainstream literature, we will concentrate on the broader ideas common to these texts, especially ethical questions: would it be right to create a machine with awareness? would that machine be alive? have a soul? Throughout, we will consider the relation between these fictions and the increasingly computerized world we inhabit. We will read both short and long fiction, experiment with a rudimentary virtual-reality environment, and do other computer-assisted work that connects with the artificial-intelligence motif of the course. We will work our way into the reading of SF by writing about it almost every day, and by completing two larger writing projects.
Wyrm Wyrm. Author fabi, mark; Published by Bantam Books in 1998; ISBN 0553578081. CommentsWyrm is a great science fiction book for the nearturn of the millenium. http://www.acm.org/crossroads/resources/reviews/books/fiction003.html
Extractions: Comments: Wyrm is a great science fiction book for the near-turn of the millenium. One of the accolades on the back cover is a great summary; you will love Wyrm if you like "...artificial intelligence, the Internet, computer viruses, role-playing games, mythology, science fiction, Lewis Carroll, or Monty Python." There are insider jokes galore, though, so if you arent widely read in cyberpunk and science fiction, you might not get all of the jokes...but that can also serve as a type of pointer to other required reading for the field.
