Extractions: Sentient computer intelligence is a recurring theme in science fiction and it seems that each author has a slightly different view of how it will begin and evolve. Most however seem to believe that it won't be good for humans. The old masters like Asimov ( I, Robot ) and Williamson ( The Humanoids ) thought that the logical result of computer hardware and software was robots with personality quirks and amazing powers. Warwick Collins' Computer One was an omniscient blank slate with the ability to make malevolent decisions based only on self interest. Massively parallel and all powerful we gave it everything it needed to know and became totally dependent and totally vulnerable. Eric Harry in Society of the Mind and Arthur C Clarke in felt that a sentient computer would necessarily evolve human-like mental problems that we would have to deal with. Mark Fabi's recent novel Wyrm takes a different route. Fabi's focus is not so much the computer, but instead on the software which acheives a virus/worm hybrid state

I suppose if you're going to mix your genres, you could certainly do a lot worse. The novel follows Michael Arcangelo (as in Archangel Michael, as in the herald of the Apocalypse), a computer virus hunter and gaming expert, as he accepts a job debugging the Goodnight system, a chess machine designed to beat the world's grandmasters. Except, of course, this is no ordinary virus. Soon it begins popping up in systems across the globe and revealing an alarming sense of growing self-awareness. Michael tracks the virus back to the mysterious hacker and game designer Roger Dworkin, who created it for use in an online MUD (multi-user dungeon) so real it could kill. Eventually Michael and his team must enter the now-lethal game, in a race against time to stop a virus that has seized control of the Internet and threatens to cause a Millennium Crash that will bring new meaning to the phrase.

If anything, it becomes more insistent and rhetorically tenacious, in indirect recognition both of the exacting implications of the choice of blackness in a segregated society and of how much easier passing has become in a post-Emancipation era of greater mobility and potential loosening of family and community ties. The danger Harper tries to exorcise becomes fully realized in the fictional autobiography of James Weldon Johnson's Ex-Colored Man, the 1912 descendant of a male line of determined passers that goes back through Chesnutt's John Walden to Webb's Clarence Garie. In contrast with Clarence Garie's eventual exposure and pathetic death, both John Walden and the Ex-Colored Man survive the text's closure. Chesnutt diffuses the threat of his successful passer by progressively withdrawing narrative attention from him, so that by the end of the novel John Walden practically disappears in the background and implicitly into whiteness. Johnson's Ex-Colored Man, on the contrary, remains prominent throughout the text, not only as protagonist but also as narrator, having survived and prospered by his defiance of racial barriers (through passing) and sexual taboos (through intermarriage).
