Both pub. by Current Books, Round West, Thrissur-680001. EDASSERI GOVINDAN Nair (1906-74) and Cherukad (Govinda Pisharodi, 1914-76) rank high among the literary activists of the last century. THE FIRST book is a collection of Edasseri's plays including three full-length plays, 11 one-act plays and two radio plays. He wrote most of them during a turbulent period in politics. He established a firm reputation with his very first play, "Koottukrishi" (joint farming), which appeared in 1950. Written and staged to propagate the socialist concept of agriculture, it electrified the peasantry in Malabar. Re-reading the play half-a-century later, the propagandist element seems to stand out, but the story line and dialogues still carry it through. Later on he turned to radio plays. Both the radio plays "Ghatolkachan" and "Jarasandhante putri" are based on themes drawn from epics.

Thahfathul Mujahudheen (Victory of Fighters) written by Shekh Zainudhin MakhdumII is the first official book in Kerala history Thunjath Ezhuthachan. Ezhuthachan is considered as the Father of Modern Malayalam. Thunjath Ezhuthachan was born around 450 years ago at Thunchan Parampu in Thrikkandiyoor in (old) Ponnani taluk in Malappuram district. All malayalees consider Thunchan parampu as a holy place. His real name was Ramanujan and signs of brilliance were evident in his childhood. He traveled extensively in search of knowledge and returned to Thrikandiyur, his birthplace, after mastering the religious sciences. Thunchattu Ezhuthachan, the greatest Malayalam poet of all time, wrote his two great epics Adhyatma Ramayanam and Srimahabharatam and two shorter pieces, Irupattinalu Vrittam and Harinama Kirtanam and thereby revolutionized Malayalam language and literature at once. He is rightly regarded as the maker of modern Malayalam and the father of Malayalam poetry. The study of Malayalam should properly begin with the acquisition of the skill to read Ezhuthachan's Ramayanam with fluency. It was in his works that the Sanskrit and Dravidian streams in our language as well as literature achieved a proper synthesis.

Extractions: Before the sonorous, modern road traffic took over the scene, were ferries are the usual way of traffic connecting the lands on either sides with the advantage of bridges, ferries gradually receded to memories. The traditional boats Vallam and Vanchikkaran or the ferryman was once the part of day-to-day life of each village. Ferries connected the isolated villagers together and the people exchanges views and news at the ferry traditional communication. The romantic experience with ferries is still remaining afresh in the memories of elder people. Bridges upsets the finer sensibilities to such an extent that it gave birth to many poems and stories lamenting over the disappearing ferries.
