The most influential American singer and composer of popular music in the sixties was born Robert Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up in Hibbing, a mining town in northern Minnesota where his father ran a hardware store. Zimmerman attended the University of Minnesota and in 1960 arrived in New York's Greenwich Village as Bob Dylan, an aspiring folksinger and songwriter. He modeled himself at first on Woody Guthrie. But his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963), marked his emergence as the voice of his generation, a fierce nonconformist and passionate critic of racism, injustice, and war. Dylan's engagement with the civil rights movement in 1962-1963 led to his topical protest songs that also succeeded as art. "Blowin' in the Wind," his best-known song, was allusive and beautiful; it became an anthem of the civil rights struggle. During the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, he wrote "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," which conveyed a sense of terror with its chilling poetic images. At twenty-two, Dylan had brought his personal vision and political commitments together with a power and a beauty that neither he nor anyone else would later equal in popular music. Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964), his next album, stunned his fans. He dismissed social issues and sang personal songs that expressed, among other feelings, considerable bitterness toward women. It was the first of his several transformations, viewed by many fans as a betrayal: after abandoning protest for personal songs, he would abandon folk for rock, then rock for country, and then Judaism for born-again Christianity.

Here's how: Shalom Aleichem was the pen name for Shalom Rabinovitz, the author and humorist known as the "Mark Twain" of Yiddish literature. Born in 1859 in Pereyaslav, Ukraine, he died in New York City in 1916. Norman Raeben was Dylan's art teacher in 1974. The techniques for seeing Dylan learned with him were the inspiration for "Tangled Up in Blue." And Norman's frequent use of the word "idiot!" led to "Idiot Wind." Sholem Asch (1880-1957) was a Yiddish novelist and dramatist. Born in Kutno, Poland into a scholarly Orthodox family. His typical characters "like their creator, yearn for an ideal and search for a faith," according to the Encyclopedia Judaica. Asch was "a first-rate storyteller who clothed romantic idealism with a realistic style. He stressed the individuality of his characters as well as their national and social environment, their moral deliberations, and their religious strivings.... deeply attached to the legacy of the Jewish past, which he enshrined in novels and drams of aesthetic beauty and moral grandeur, he connected the Yiddish world to the mainstream of European and American culture." Extractions: By Frank Davey, December 1969 T he close relationship between poetry and music scarcely needs to be argued. Both are aural modes which employ rhythm, rime, and pitch as major devices; to these the one adds linguistic meaning, connotation, and various traditional figures, and the other can add, at least in theory, all of these plus harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration techniques. In English the two are closely bound historically. Anglo-Saxon heroic poetry seems certainly to have been read or chanted to a harpist's accompaniment; the verb used in Beowulf for such a performance, the Finn episode, is singan, to sing, and the noun gyd, song. A major source of the lyric tradition in English poetry is the songs of the troubadours. T he distance between the gleomannes gyd in Beowulf or "Sumer is Icumen In" and the songs of Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan may seem great, but is one of time rather than aesthetics. The lyric poem as a literary work and the lyrics of a popular song are both still essentially the same thing: poetry. Whether the title of the work be "Gerontion," "You Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog," or "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," our criteria for evaluating the work must remain the same. T B ob Dylan and Leonard Cohen represent two highly contrasting directions from which the attempt to restore significance and integrity of vision to the popular song can be made. Bob Dylan is the child runaway who became a professional songwriter by deliberate hard work, and whose emergence as a poet of some talent seems to have been accidental, almost as if he had unconsciously realized that good songs have to contain reasonably good lyric poetry. Leonard Cohen is a university-educated formalistic poet who has moved in an opposite direction with his recent discovery that a good lyric poem could equally be a good song. Dylan brings to poetry a spontaneity of rhythm and a resourcefulness in imagery that had long been qualities of American folk music, as in that of Hudie Ledbetter or of Dylan's own idol, Woodie Guthrie. Cohen takes to the poem as popular song a scholarly precision of language and an obsession for external form.
