He began writing children's books in the 40s and most of them are still in print and even though he has been a favorite of several generations of children, it is only in recent years that children's literature writers and critics have even deigned to mention his name. No one has ever claimed that Seuss was a great poet, although many of his books use rhyme. Few would hold him up as one of the great illustrators yet neither can they deny his talent and capacity for creating delight in millions of readers.

I am not a Dr. Seuss expert, so please don't expect me to answer any questions about his life and work. For a comprehensive list of who's who and what's what in Dr. Seuss, check out the Dartmouth publication at: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~drseuss/whoswho.pdf With millions of books in print, and nearly all of his 50-plus titles still available for sale, Dr. Seuss was, up until his untimely death in 1991, probably the most prolific living writer behind Barbara Cartland. In fact, his GREEN EGGS AND HAM is the third largest selling book in the English language. Born Theodor Geisel in 1904, Dr. Seuss has lent his talent to advertising campaigns of the 1940s, political cartoons for PM, and a 1935 comic strip for Hearst publications called HEJJI, about a young lad's travels through the mythical land of Baako. Commendations awarded to Seuss include an Academy Award for best documentary short subject of 1945 for his writing and production of the propaganda piece YOUR JOB IN GERMANY (aka HITLER LIVES). He also wrote (but did not create) GERALD McBOING-BOING, a 1951 Oscar-winning cartoon. Seuss was awarded an honorary Pulitzer Prize in 1984 citing his half-century contribution to "the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents."

Minear. Minear is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and one of the country's leading historians of Japan during World War II. This exhibit, guest-curated by Minear, is based in part on his book and is the first exhibit to examine the political side of Dr. Seuss. Minear said that there is "a disconnect between what we usually think of as Dr. Seuss and the content of the cartoons." However, many Dr. Seuss's whimsical children's books also contain serious themes. Yertle the Turtle , for example, is a cautionary tale against dictators.

Extractions: A brief, rough biography of Dr. Seuss Here is a brief, mostly correct, overview of Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel. - Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, MA. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" - In 1936 on the way to a vaction in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success. - During WW II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar's for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing which also won him an Oscar.

These pages are the work of a fan for all of you out there who share a love of Dr. Seuss. Just so's you know. A long time ago (around 1994 or so) I went looking for information about Dr. Seuss on the net. I was expecting to find a lot; after all, he seemed like a natural subject for people to create pages about. I didn't find any. So, in a fit of despair, disappointment and desperation, I set about creating one. I gathered together a few parodies I found on the net, copied in all the entries from the current Books in Print did a couple of searches in the Internet Movie Database, and put it all in one place. This inspired people to do two things. 1) Send me email thanking me for having this page, and 2) Inspired them to create their own Dr. Seuss pages, having seen how empty mine were. Move to 1997. There are a number of Dr. Seuss sites out there. Some good, some bad, some official, some not. Mine still seems to be the only one with parodies on it, but y'know, that's not saying much these days. So, in a fit of frustration, and after-work energy, I go about re-vamping the pages.
