Extractions: The Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station opened near the remote crossroads of Havelock in 1942. Originally known as Cunningham Field, it included a vast industrial complex where civilian tradesmen maintained and repaired warplanes. With the local boys overseas during World War II, Cherry Point relied on women from all over Eastern North Carolina for its work force. Georgia Rae Dickinson worked at Cherry Point from 1943 to 1945. She commuted from Morehead City, where she also volunteered at the local USO. I liked her the minute I met her. When she was telling stories about Cherry Point and the USO, she made me laugh 'til it hurt one moment, then moved me to tears the next. She laughed loud and often, and I could hear more than a trace of a fine brogue that she inherited from grandparents who grew up on Shackleford Banks. The experience of working in skilled industrial trades alongside Marines transformed these women's lives. "It was an exhilaration, a boost, a thing that makes you feel like you can do anything," Dickinson told me. "It was something you don't do every day." I was an aircraft painter. I had been working at the Sanitary Fish Market in Morehead City since I was 15 years old, but you could make twice as much money up at Cherry Point. I made $1 an hour and I worked a 50-hour week. We worked side by side with the Marines, except that they came and went. They were transient. Ninety-eight percent of the workers were women. A lot of them were coming from as far as Harkers Island and Cedar Island. Every one of us was as green as gall.

Extractions: By E."B." Fiske Let's talk first meetings: I have precisely three penultimate memories involving women: The first occurred when I was a 25-year-old virgin and moved (down deep) a couple of Atlantic City whores when I held a casino door for them before I knew what they were about. The big one trashed the potential for a perfect memory pinching my wallet. The next came three years later: I evoked a special smile from a black-eyed, raven-haired Soho waitress when I grossly over-tipped her. The last and best time was that rainy Sunday evening when Angie B. Dickinson-Plath shoved a copy of Loofahs for Lepers in my face at a signing party at Brentanos. She said I was her God. The ensuing inscription segued into a dinner invitation. The bookstore was closing and it was raining buckets and neither of us had an umbrella. I snatched up a life-size, promotional cardboard standup of myself: My one-dimensional stand-in provided dubious shelter as we dashed two blocks to a crummy little spaghetti house hole-in-the-wall. We checked my soggy self with my hounds tooth overcoat and Angie's black duster. The cardboard promo started our rainy dash looking more or less like me: half decrepit-Bob Mitchum/half David Bowie. Angie said my now-sagging cardboard double had morphed into a dead ringer of Charley Callas with a goatee and snap-brim fedora.

Extractions: "Growing older doesn't bother me," she said sitting on the couch in her living room. "Would you prefer to see me play opposite Robert Redford or Michele Pfeiffer? As a moviegoer, I wouldn't want to see me in that kind of part. I don't resent this type of casting at all. I understand it. What I'd like to do is play Sharon Stone's or Al Pacino's mother. That's what I'd like really hot and hip mothers, or even grandmothers. I just don't want to play boring or stereotypical mother roles." Dickinson, however, says she has no desire to turn back the clock. "What's the point?" she asked. "You can't stop the aging process. There's only so much oil you can put on your body. I've always just tried to go with my age. If the part requires somebody a little younger or older, I can probably get away with that." A native of Kulm, North Dakota, Angeline Brown (she took the name Dickinson from her first husband), and her family moved when she was a child to Glendale, Calif., near Los Angeles. While working as a secretary for an aerospace company, some friends urged her to enter a local television beauty pageant. She took first prize, which included a chorus line spot in The Colgate Comedy Hour , starring Jimmy Durante. Although bitten by the acting bug, Dickinson, in keeping with her Midwestern sensibilities, kept her secretarial job while pursuing work in film and television.

With her chestnut brown hair, large eyes and healthy good looks, Dickinson first played wholesome roles, but her husky voice and oft-displayed legs suggested a move to tougher, more sultry parts. An early example of this was the half-Chinese combatant against the Vietcong which she played in Samuel Fuller's typically bizarre action pic, "China Gate" (1957). More...

Extractions: There are a lot of enigmas in Dickinsons poetry for the reader. The literary legacy is immense. She is with Walt Whitman one of the two greatest American poets of the 19 th century. Like Whitman Emily Dickinson rejected custom and received wisdom and experimented with poetic style. But in many ways Dickinson and Whitman have come to represent the extreme idiosyncratic pose of the American society. Dickinson is intensely inward, private, elliptical and mystical. Whitman conversely is outward looking, public, rhapsodic, and again mystical. Dickinson declared in one of her poems, Im Nobody, who are you? addressing the reader. Whitman, on the other hand, began, Walt Whitman, an American, one of the roughs, a kosmos. Again Whitman is inclusive whereas Dickinson is exclusive. Both poets were committed to poetry in an absolute and uncompromising way. And their unconventional lives were so arranged that poetry what Dickinson called, the soul at the white ? took primary over all else. And for all that Whitman and Dickinson are also opposites. She condensed where he was discursive and celebratory. His long lines, at time long winded lines, his social inclusiveness and democratic optimism contrasted against her compressed and elliptical structures, her unique perspective, the chill appraisal of human isolation and vulnerability. She was taut, terse, obliquely suggestive. The words she chose live vividly on the page and invite readers to fill the poems with their own sense of connection. That is, you as reader have to do really a lot of work getting the meaning out of the poem or into the poem. Her tone is often both intimate and stark, especially in many of those personal first poems which begin with an I in the first line like
