Extractions: E ver since I first set up my website to promote my one man show, Charles Dickens LIVE! , there has been a growing number of people who have sent email seeking more information on Dickens' life. Because my research has taken me through at least 8,000 pages of biographical material, I've decided to put all that studying to use by compiling a journal of his life, and then making it available on this website. Many of the biographies I've read, of course seem largely chronological. But they will make occasional small leaps backward and forward in time in an attempt to show the relational cause and effect of one event on another. Rather than attempt to write another biography, since there are already an abundance of them, I felt it may provide a better service, particularly to Dickens scholars, to provide a day by day presentation that is ... A summary of the major events in Dickens' life was a part of the first installment. Work progresses on a more detailed journal, and is being presented a year at a time. The index that provides access to these journals is updated as each new addition is made, as well as an entry to the Updates page. At the inception of this project I anticipated it would take a year to complete, and would have a "final" unveiling in January, 2000. But that date found us two years short of the midpoint in Dickens life, and the balance appears to be an uphill climb, as the remaining years hold an abundance of data to be compiled. But it has been a year that has garnered many new acquaintances, so it has been well worth the effort.

He invented this idea of telling the life story of a great writer through becoming his characters and becoming him. It was such a pleasure and I thought we must find another writer. BBC4: Why did you chose Dickens? SC: The criterion was that the person was not only a wonderful writer but that his life should have been deeply interesting. When you look at English writers, Dickens is about the only person who fulfils these criteria. I thought, "Who could possibly write this?" Ackroyd came immediately to mind. I knew him a little bit socially, and obviously his book is the definitive biography, and I knew that he was interested in writing for the theatre. Fleet Prison

Extractions: Fleet Prison was situated off Faringdon Road and is now occupied by Caronne House. The prison was named after a river that flowed outside the prison walls. Originally built in 1197 the prison was destroyed three times: Peasants' Revolt (1381), the Great Fire (1666) and the Gordon Riots (1780). In the 1750s Fleet Prison was mainly used for debtors and bankrupts. It usually contained some 300 prisoners and their families. Some inmates were forced to beg from their cells that overlooked the street, in order to pay for their keep. Fleet Prison is described by Charles Dickens in his novel The Pickwick Papers and was featured in The Rake's Progress by William Hogarth . Fleet Prison was demolished in 1846. The court into which you enter is the whole length of the building which is about 90 feet. Passing through the lobby, you enter the inner court, where the prisoners entertain themselves with tennis fives, and other amusements, as represented in the print. The keeper is called the warden of the Fleet, and his fees from the prisoners for turning the key, for chamber rent, etc. and this amounts to a considerable sum.

Extractions: A prolific novelist, Dickens was born in Portsmouth to John and Elizabeth Dickens. Young Charles had an unsettled childhood due to the financial irresponsibilities of his parents. He had to go to work in Warren's Blacking Factory, just two days after his twelfth birthday, as a result of his father being thrown into debtor's prison. He attended a series of schools, where he was a voracious reader, after which he became an office boy in a law firm. He became a reporter and worked for his uncle's publication, "The Mirror of Parliament". In 1833 he became Parliamentary journalist for The Morning Chronicle, and wrote freelance sketches for many different publications. From his time as a reporter, Dickens acquired an intimate knowledge of the streets, parks, alleys, mews, gardens, markets and lanes of London, which would provide him with much useful background material for his later work. His experiences as a journalist and selections from his outside writings were published as his first book, "Sketches by Boz" (1836). The pseudonym, Boz, was derived from his own childhood mispronunciation of the name Moses.

Extractions: Byrom considers Alton Locke to be an ambiguous and confusing novel. Kingsley is ambivalent about violence. While he clearly sides with Alton and the notion of a fighting working class, he also agrees with the orderly and conservative ideals of an aristocracy enlightened by the Church. Kingsley is surprising in leaving Catholicism relatively untouched; rather it is the dissenters, especially the Baptists, who receive a harsh criticism. Also, the Tractarians are criticized as is Transcendentalism which Bryom considers Kingsley failed to understand properly. Unlike Yeast which suffered from an excessive authorial presence, the autobiographical mode of Alton Locke results in a work more a novel than a tract. Bryom concludes that Alton Locke , though entertaining, is only a fitful success. Reading it is rather like watching a film in which much of the footage is out of focus (ix). Though it is primarily to be considered a failure when compared to the works of Dickens, this is instructive.
