Despite some obscure incidents regarding the "joint paper" (1858) with Wallace, Darwin's originality and consistency were well-confirmed by his later career and works; On the Origin of Species (1959) presented the overall structure of his theory, and The Decent of Man (1871) extended his basic idea consistently to man, in contradistintion to Wallace's more eclectic view, together with a detailed elaboration of sexual selection. His "dangerous idea" (as Daniel Dennett puts it) is still powerful and fertile today. EDITOR'S NOTE: This glossary did not appear in the first edition and has been reproduced here directly from the sixth edition ABERRANT Forms or groups of animals or plants which deviate in important characters from their nearest allies, so as not to be easily included in the same group with them, are said to be aberrant. ABERRATION (in Optics) In the refraction of light by a convex lens the rays passing through different parts of the lens are brought to a focus at slightly different distances, this is called spherical aberration ; at the same time the coloured rays are separated by the prismatic action of the lens and likewise brought to a focus at different distances, this is chromatic aberration ABNORMAL Contrary to the general rule.

Darwin originally intended to study medicine, but was unable to bear the sight of surgeries performed without anesthesia. His second choice of a career was clergyman, but after earning his degree from Cambridge Univeristy he began to focus more on naturalism, taking the position of naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle which set sail for the South Pacific at the end of 1831. Darwin's experiences and research while on the Beagle lead to his development of a theory of evolution. He published his famous book

Extractions: Darwin's job as naturalist aboard the Beagle gave him the opportunity to observe the various geological formations found on different continents and islands along the way, as well as a huge variety of fossils and living organisms. In his geological observations, Darwin was most impressed with the effect that natural forces had on shaping the earth's surface. At the time, most geologists adhered to the so-called catastrophist theory that the earth had experienced a succession of creations of animal and plant life, and that each creation had been destroyed by a sudden catastrophe, such as an upheaval or convulsion of the earth's surface. According to this theory, the most recent catastrophe, Noah's flood, wiped away all life except those forms taken into the ark. The rest were visible only in the form of fossils. In the view of the catastrophists, species were individually created and immutable, that is, unchangeable for all time. The catastrophist viewpoint (but not the immutability of species) was challenged by the English geologist Sir Charles Lyell in his two-volume work Principles of Geology (1830-33). Lyell maintained that the earth's surface is undergoing constant change, the result of natural forces operating uniformly over long periods.

Extractions: Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Darwin, Charles English scientist (1809-1892) He was born in Shrewsbury to a moderately wealthy family with a strong intellectual heritage. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was a physician, poet and biologist who laid some of the groundwork for the grandson's revolutionary ideas. Charles attended Christ's College at Cambridge with initial thoughts of entering the clergy, but soon took up studies in biology, zoology and geology. From 1831 to 1836, he served as naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle on its scientific mission to South America and the Pacific. Back in England, he published a series of scientific treatises which established his reputation as one of the prominent thinkers of his day. From 1842 onwards, he lived on a country estate in Kent and pursued his studies among its gardens and livestock. Charles Darwin By 1844, he had written the initial draft of his groundbreaking treatise on evolution and natural selection. However, he left this work unpublished for several years, preferring to refine and elaborate its core ideas. In 1858, he read a forthcoming paper by fellow scientist Alfred Russell Wallace whose thesis closely paralleled Darwin's own unpublished ideas, an event which pushed Darwin to go public with his own research. Both Wallace's and Darwin's papers were presented to the Linnean Society in a famous July, 1858 meeting. Darwin published The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
