Extractions: Charles Darwin ( PORTRAIT - 49K ) was born on 12 February, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. His father, Robert Darwin, was a physician, the son of Erasmus Darwin, a poet, philosopher, and naturalist. Charles's mother, Susannah Wedgwood Darwin, died when he was eight years old. At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at Edinburgh University. Repelled by the sight of surgery performed without anesthesia, he eventually went to Cambridge Univeristy to prepare to become a clergyman in the Church of England. After receiving his degree, Darwin accepted an invitation to serve as an unpaid naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle, which departed on a five-year scientific expedition to the Pacific coast of South America on 31 December, 1831. Darwin's research resulting from this voyage formed the basis of his famous book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection . Published in 1859, the work aroused a storm of controversy. Here Darwin outlined his theory of evolution, challenging the contemporary beliefs about the creation of life on earth. Darwin continued to write and publish his works on biology throughout his life. He lived with his wife and children at their home in the village of Downe, fifteen miles from London. Thought now to have suffered from panic disorder, as well as from Chagas' disease contracted during his travels in South America, Darwin was plagued with fatigue and intestinal sickness for the rest of his life. He died on 19 April, 1882, and lies buried in Westminster Abbey.

Die Fahrt begann am 27. Dezember 1831 von Plymouth aus und führte nach Brasilien, zu den Galapagos-Inseln, nach Südafrika, zu mehreren Pazifik-Inseln, nach Neuseeland, Australien und zurück nach England, wo Schiff und Mannschaft schließlich am 2. Oktober 1936 in Falmouth anlegten und Darwin seine Familie wieder sah. Als im Jahre 1859 Charles Darwins grundlegendes Werk "On the origin of species by means of natural selection" ("Über den Ursprung der Arten durch natürliche Selektion"; auch nur kurz als "Die Entstehung der Arten" betitelt) erschien, bedeutete dies den Beginn des Wendepunktes in der Geschichte der Biologie und Medizin. Darwin stellte hier erstmals Prinzipien nicht nur über die (mögliche) tierische Abstammung des Menschen auf, sondern beschrieb auch die natürliche Zuchtwahl und das Überleben des Stärkeren als Naturprinzip der Lebensentwicklung.

Extractions: English naturalist who was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and father of physicist George Darwin . Darwin did poorly in school, and so could not secure employment following his graduation from divinity school. However, he was able to secure a position as ship's naturalist aboard the H. M.S. Beagle. The Beagle A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839). Darwin, reflecting on his observation, developed a theory of evolution. According to this theory, individual variability means that some organisms have a slight advantage over others. The advantage will allow the organisms to compete better in the "struggle for existence" and produced more offspring, which will inherit the advantageous qualities. The process whereby favorable traits in the most "fit" animals allow it to survive and reproduce, Darwin called "natural selection." He included the idea of "sexual selection" in his theory, stating that the struggle for possession of females will lead the most vigorous males producing the most progeny. Darwin was probably influenced in his formulation of evolution by the Uniformitarian views expressed in Lyell's Principles of Geology

With the assistance of a grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the play was performed, at 5 different venues in Eastern Iowa from March to September 2000. In the productions the role of Charles Darwin was acted by Mr. Sandford. The play, a living history reenactment for one actor, includes a 6-minute recreation of the historic debate at Oxford in June 1860 between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and the biologist Thomas Huxley, with the actor portraying both roles. The production which occurred at the Dows Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of Coe College on the evening of April 20, 2000 was videotaped and 3 short segments from the performance are available by clicking here:
