Die DIG unterstützt auch den Erhalt von Kulturdenkmälern in Hamburg und Umgebung - wie des Römischen Gartens - geplant sind die Wiederherstellung des historischen Rosengartens sowie die Bespielung des Heckentheaters.

Het doel was vooral de band met de Italiaanse emigranten in den vreemde te onderhouden en hen te helpen trouw te blijven aan de cultuur en de taal van het moederland. Het genootschap werd genoemd naar de beroemde Italiaanse dichter Dante Alighieri (1265 1321), die met zijn Divina Commedia tot de wereldlitteratoren behoort. Dit fraaie dichtwerk in de lingua volgare heeft een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan het ontstaan van het Italiaans. In de loop van de tijd zijn de idealen en de samenstelling van het wereldwijd vertakte (400 afdelingen) Genootschap veranderd. In Nederland proberen 18 afdelingen (comitati), elk met een eigen programma, uitdrukking te geven aan hun verbondenheid met Italië en hun enthousiasme voor de taal en cultuur van het Italiaanse volk. (Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Arnhem, Breda, Deventer, Dordrecht, Eindhoven, Friesland, Twente, Sittard, Utrecht, Zeeland, Groningen, Haarlem, Leiden / Den Haag, Maastricht, Nijmegen en Rotterdam). Dit gebeurt door het organiseren van cursussen op het gebied van de Italiaanse taal en literatuur, lezingen over verschillende culturele of toeristische onderwerpen. Ook muzikale opvoeringen worden aangeboden.

W B Yeats called him "the chief imagination of Christendom." T S Eliot said: "Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them. There is no third." He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. Italy in those days was not a united country, but a collection of mostly small city-states. Feuds and power struggles between noble families were a constant source of wars between states and of turmoil and civil war within them. Dante, heir of a poor but noble family, was one of the seven elected officials in charge of the government of Florence, when an accidental collision in the street during the May Festival in 1300 led to a brawl that escalated into a civil war that ultimately got Dante's party overthrown and its leaders (including Dante) exiled from Florence. He spent the rest of his life in exile, pining for his native city. In 1293 he published a book called the Vita Nuova ("The New Life"), in which he relates how he fell in love with a young girl (Beatrice), and found his chief happiness in thinking of her, and looking at her from afar. Misztika - azaz élményvallásosság. Késõ középkorra jellemzõ vallásos eszmeáramlat - a lélek Isten felé vezetõ útja és az Abszolútummal való végsõ egyesülés érdekli leginkább. Személyes vallásosságot feltételez, egyéni, közvetítõ nélküli utat. Ezt járta be Assissi Szt. Ferenc vagy Clervaux-i Szt. Bernát, s ezt az utat járta be Dante is, bár a korban szokatlan kísérõket választ maga mellé: Vergiliust és Beatricét. Emiatt válik egyúttal Dante életének, hitvallásának összegzõjévé is a mû. Köztes kor, a középkor és az Itáliában már nyomokban jelentkezõ reneszánsz gyümölcse. Ezt fejezi ki kísérõválasztásának látszólagos ellentmondása. Vergilius a keresztény középkor egyetlen "legitimált" latin lírikusa: az ókori görög bölcselõk elmés átmentésén túl (például: Arisztotelész filozófiáját Aquinói Szt. Tamás "kereszteli meg" a skolasztikában) õ lesz az egyedüli, akit megtûrnek a kolostorokban is. (Hogy jobban megértsd és megismerd ezt a világot érdemes elolvasni, vagy megnézni filmen Umberto Eco középkorban játszódó, hihetetlenül izgalmas bûnügyi históriáját, A rózsa nevét!). Kivételes helyzetét egyik eklogájának köszönheti. Az elhíresült negyedik eklogában ugyanis említést tesz egy csodás gyermek születésérõl, egy Szûzrõl s egy szebb világ eljövetelérõl.

Nahezu alles, was über das Leben des Dichters bekannt ist, beruht auf Angaben oder Andeutungen, die Dante selbst in seinen Werken macht. Dante ist vermutlich im Mai oder Juni 1265 in der Pfarrei S. Martino del Vescovo in Florenz geboren. Eltern: Alighiero di Bellincione (gehört zum niederen, guelfisch gesinnter Stadtadel) und Bella (verstirbt früh), Stiefmutter: Lapa di Chiarissimo Cialuffi (übernimmt Dantes Erziehung). um 1285 Einige Zeit nach dem Tod des Vaters (1281 oder 82) heiratet Dante Gemma, eine Tochter der mächtigen Familie Donati. Aus der Ehe gehen 4 Kinder hervor (Giovanni, Pietro, Jacopo, Antonia). Dantes Ausbildung beginnt vermutlich mit dem Unterricht bei einem Privatlehrer in Florenz. Möglicherweise war Brunetto Latini (ca. 1220-1294) einer seiner Lehrer. Eventuell hat er anschließend in Bologna studiert. Dort knüpft er auch erste Beziehungen zu den Dichtern des neuen Stils wie Guido Guinizelli, Cino da Pistoia und Guido Cavalcanti; mit diesem wird ihn eine enge Freundschaft verbinden. Als Berittener nimmt Dante an der Schlacht von Campaldino gegen Arezzo und die toskanischen Ghibellinen teil, die Florenz den Sieg und der ghibellinischen Partei den Untergang beschert.
