Er wurde in Arpinum (heute Arpino in Italien) geboren und studierte Recht, Rhetorik, Literatur und Philosophie in Rom. Nach kurzem Militärdienst ging er nach Griechenland und Kleinasien, um seine Studien fortzusetzen. Er kehrte 77 v. Chr. nach Rom zurück und begann seine politische Laufbahn. 74 v. Chr. wurde er in den Senat gewählt. Sein Durchbruch als Anwalt und Politiker in Rom gelang ihm 70 v. Chr. im Prozess gegen Verres. Obwohl Ciceros Familie nicht zur römischen Aristokratie gehörte, wurde er 64 v. Chr. gegen seinen Mitfavoriten Catilina zum Konsul gewählt. Als dieser während der Amtszeit Ciceros einen Staatsstreich zum Sturz der Regierung organisierte, deckte Cicero die Verschwörung auf und ließ einige Angehörige der Gruppe um Catilina hinrichten. Gaius Julius Caesar und andere römische Senatoren sahen in Ciceros Vorgehen allerdings ein überhastetes Handeln, das den Verschwörern keinen angemessenen Rechtsprozess gewährt hatte. Cicero wurde daraufhin 58 v. Chr. zum Exil gezwungen. Nach einem einjährigen Aufenthalt in Makedonien wurde er vom römischen General Pompeius nach Rom zurückgerufen.

For " cicer " is the Latin name for chick-pea , and this ancestor of Cicero, as it would seem, had a faint dent in the end of his nose like the cleft of a chick-pea, from which he acquired his surname.

Det knap så sjove var, at jeg pga. varmen og isolationen blev nødt til at opholde mig inden døre en stor del af tiden. Jeg tror ikke, at det er nogen overdrivelse at sige, at der, helt bogstaveligt, ikke er noget som helst at foretage sig i Death Valley ud over at drikke øl og skrive bøger. At der ikke ligefrem er vokset en litterær bevægelse ud af Mojave-ørkenen, skal ikke afholde mig fra at sige, at det kun er et spørgsmål om tid, inden Death Valley bliver det næste Bloomsbury. Og husk: Det var mig, der sagde det første gang.
