Posteriormente se prepara en el Instituto de Perfeccionamiento Profesional Zentpaly de Bogotá y comienza a ejercer su carrera como corredor de seguros. Paralelamente a estos estudios, Campo Miranda realiza esatudios musicales teniendo entre sus profesores a Pedro Biava, el guitarrista cartagenero Calixto Gonzales, al violonchelista y trombonista Guido Perla y al compositor cartagenero Adolfo Mejía. Con ellos realiza estudios en solfeo, teoría de la música, guitarra clásica, armonía historia del arte y de la música. Toda la atmósfera musical que se vivía en Barranquilla hacia los años treinta sumado al entorno familiar, van sirviendo como telón de fondo para ir creando una semilla de músico natural. Su primer porro, "Pasión Tropical", lo compuso a los 18 años. A partir de ese momento su padre, Juan campo Serrano, y su madre, Cándida Rosa Miranda, se dan cuenta que a pesar que un familiar les había advertido que su hijo iba a ser un héroe militar por haber nacido el 7 de Agosto (Día de la Independecia Colombiana), el destino le había deparado los caminos de la música y la poesía. Al llegar la década de los cuarenta, en la cual el porro y la música costeña adquieren gran audiencia y difusión, en parte debido a la radio y al industria del disco, se destapa en definitiva la vena compositora de Campo Miranda. Campo's newest book is The Healing Art: A Doctor's Black Bag of Poetry . He is the author of four books of poetry, including Diva (Duke, 1999), What the Body Told , and a collection of essays, The Poetry of Healing: A Doctor's Education in Empathy, Identity,and Desire. Campo has received the National Hispanic Academy of Arts and Sciences Annual Achievement Prize, the Pushcart Prize, a National Poetry Series award, and two Lambda Literary Awards. Dr. Campo teaches at Harvard Medical School and is an associate at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Campo writes often about his Cuban heritage, his work with AIDS patients and his identity as a gay man. This reading is sponsored by the Frannie Peabody Center, Longfellow Books and Maine Humanities Council. Un lustro antes había viajado del pequeño municipio de Patillal (Cesar), donde nació el 17 de mayo de 1927, a estudiar en Valledupar. Amiguero y sentimental, la vida escolar fue para él un plato agridulce, como lo revelan muchos de sus cantos ("El hambre del Liceo", "El testamento", "El bachiller"). Terminada la primaria, entró al colegio María Concepción Loperena, un instituto de bachillerato fundado meses atrás. Uno de los pocos estímulos que le ofrecía el Loperena, aparte de sus condiscípulos, era cierto maestro al que todos adoraban: el profesor Heriberto Castañeda. Este se preocupaba porque los muchachos no sólo aprendieran lecciones sino que crecieran como personas. Jugaba fútbol con ellos, procuraba interesarlos en las materias y participaba en sus reuniones y sus chistes. Sin embargo, al comenzar las clases de 1943, los alumnos se enteraron de una mala noticia: Castañeda había sido trasladado al Liceo Almirante Padilla, de Ríohacha. Compositor típico y atípico Las historias de Escalona salieron de Valledupar en los años cincuenta; sedujeron a los cachacos en los años sesenta; en los setenta fueron catalizador para que el vallenato se convirtiera en la música colombiana más popular; pasaron al repertorio internacional y a la televisión en los ochenta; y sirvieron en los noventa para producir impacto en el mercado de discos y conciertos de América y Europa, de la mano de Carlos Vives. Cantos suyos han sido interpretados por artistas y orquestas famosas de América y Europa. De algunos de ellos hay versiones en salsa, en música sinfónica y hasta en flamenco.

I live in a nation where we are told constantly that we have something infinitely more dire to face, a terrible, all-consuming menace that really could strike any one of us at any moment: terrorism. The generally inept Bush administration does a good job in perhaps this one respect: scaring the American people. World AIDS Day asks us to remember that more than 42 million people across the globe suffer from HIV and AIDS. Each day, 15,000 more contract the disease. Without the kinds of treatments that we are so fortunate to have at our disposal here in America and in Western Europe, most of these people will die, joining the 28 million lives already lost to the epidemic. Less than 2 percent of those infected had access to these treatments by the end of 2001, according to a U.N. report. Almost all of the ones getting the treatments were in the West.
