Mit Antony Balch machte er von 1962 bis 1965 einige experimentelle Kurzfilme, die u. a. die Cut-up-Technik auch auf den Film übertrugen. 1968 hatte Burroughs eine kurze Affaire mit Scientology, bei der er sogar ein sogenannter "Clear" wurde, sich aber später wieder von der Organisation lossagte und zahlreiche gegen Scientology gerichtete Artikel veröffentlichte. Allen Ginsberg, Burroughs' Freund und neben Kerouac der wichtigste der Autoren, die sich in den 50er Jahren selbst die "Beat"-Generation nannten, starb bereits im April diesen Jahres. Ginsberg war es, der Burroughs erst zum Schreiben ermutigte. Neben all dem, was Burroughs' eigenem künstlerischen Output entsprang, (Bücher, Bilder, CDs, Filme) gab es auch den Prominenten William S. Burroughs. Der trat in Filmen von Klaus Maeck (DECODER, 1984), Jacob Burckard (IT DON'T PAY TO BE AN HONEST CITIZEN, 1984) und Gus van Sant (DRUGSTORY COWBOY, 1991) auf. Mit letzterem nahm er im gleichen Jahr auch die Single "The Elvis of Letters" auf, die klarmachte, wie viel Sampling und Scratching mit Cut-up zu tun haben.
