Calamity Jane When she was in El Paso, Texas, Calamity met Clinton burk. martha cannary, the fearlessrider and great shooter of the Wild West, will always be thought of as http://schoolweb.missouri.edu/rallsr2.k12.mo.us/elem/melloway/mo/14.htm
Extractions: Calamity Jane Fearless and a great shooter are words that describe one of our own famous Missourians, Martha Jane Cannary. This woman chewed tobacco, used bad language, drank a lot, and was handy with a gun. She wore mens clothing. When people hear about Wild Bill Hickock or Pony Express riders, they might think of Martha Jane Cannary also known as Calamity Jane, the legend and hero of the Wild West. Martha Cannary was born in Princeton, Missouri on May 1, 1852. Her father, Robert, and her mother, Charlotte, were born in Ohio. Martha had two brothers and three sisters. She was the oldest of the children. She loved ponies all of her life. Her family moved from Missouri to Virginia City, Montana in 1865, and that is where she became a great shooter and a fearless rider. Her mother died in 1866, and her father died 1867 in Utah. Thats when she became an orphan. When Martha Cannary grew up she was a scout in General Custers forces. She saved Captain Egan. He got shot when she was right in front of him, and she stopped and put him on her horse and rode him to safety. Thats how she got her name, Calamity Jane. While she was a scout she got deathly sick. She was very sick for two weeks. Then she got better. In June 1876, she worked as a Pony Express rider. She carried the mail from Deadwood, South Dakota to Custer. She rode 50 miles as a Pony Express rider over the roughest trail in the Black Hills. Later, Martha told stories to the public about her life while she was a Pony Express rider. Her listeners loved the stories she shared.
