Extractions: SARAH MINHAS We know so little of black history in Canada. Much of the existing work is scant and general. We know even less about the history of black women in Canada their hopes, fears, dreams and struggles. That's why a book like No Burden to Carry is a significant and colorful contribution to our history. In the wake of the recent Los Angeles and Toronto riots, the Stephen Lewis report on anti-black racism made a strong recommendation that school reading lists should include books written by black authors. No Burden to Carry is a timely entry for that list. Compiled by author and filmmaker Dionne Brand, the book is an anthology of stories by black women from the U.S. and the Caribbean whose lives spanned the 1920s to the 1950s, and who struggled against racism, lack of opportunity and a hostile climate to find a place in the Ontario sun. The painfully touching, yet brave and encouraging voices of the 14 women, many of whom are still alive, reads like a cinema v,rit, documentary, and is reminiscent of the movie The Color Purple. Although from different places some were daughters of fugitives from slavery in the U.S., others were daughters of women brought in as domestics from the Caribbean they all share and recall their experiences in the black church, the Marcus Garvey Movement, and the restricted job opportunities confined mostly to domestic or farm work.

For the purposes of this project the term African-Canadian refers to people of African descent, regardless of country of birth. People of African descent living in the Atlantic Diaspora such as Canada, the United States of America, South America, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and Europe have been variously called Negro, Coloured, Black and African. These terms have come into existence at different times during the most recent 500-year history of the Atlantic Slave Trade, plantation slavery in the New World, and European colonization of Africa. Readers are encouraged to read and discuss the Africa/Black literary criticism and literary theory in order to appreciate the unique themes and preoccupations of the writers and the literatures.
