Extractions: To say that I've made some interesting friends over the years would be a serious understatement. One of the funnier people that I've ever met is Steve Beai. When I met Steve, he was playing drums with my good friend Blind Jimmy Blues. Steve, James, site designer Shawn and I spent many evenings in the Coffee Grounds in Terre Haute prior to my finishing grad school and moving to Indy. As fate would have it, Steve's done some pretty cool things since. And even though he still runs Reservoir Studio, Steve's success has come from writing. In fact, Steve's novel, Widow's Walk, was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist this year. That's an amazing feat in the field of horror fiction. Steve has published over a 100 other short stories and articles, and his book on censorship, Censoring the Censors, was very well-received. So, this famous pal of Shawn and I has dropped by to answer some questions and basically explain himself. Kids, Steve Beai...

Extractions: Usually in the Big Question, we have guests from the realm of comics. Notable exceptions are author Steve Beai, Jeph Loeb (who has an awesome comics career but also writes films) and icon Julie Strain. However, this time Im pleased to announce that we have secured our first interview with a film director. At this point, Ill admit that Ive been very excited to have this guest. One of my sentimental favorite films from my teen years is The Monster Squad, and this gentlemen co-created and directed that film! Hes also the man behind Night of the Creeps, Robocop 3, and quite a bit more, as youll see. Before we begin, I do have to note one funny thing. Fred actually came to our site via my big Best Horror Movies of all time article (wherein I named Monster Squad as a favorite). He wrote me a very nice email, agreeing with some picks and really giving it to me over some others. Needless to say, I was flattered that he took the time, and Im very pleased that he agreed to be interviewed here. Ladies and gentlemen, Fred Dekker!

Extractions: Steve Beai The big Ferris wheel they brought down from Shelburn hung motionless against the skyline. The buckets of the Ferris wheel rocked to and fro as happy heads took in the view stretching over the horizon, over the fairgrounds far below. The Ferris wheel was larger than any Josh had ever seen, like a superstructure made by an alien race of Gods. Screams of delight-filled fear at the top of the wheel cascaded down over the heads of those on the ground. Laughing as they hurried to the next amusement, they carried wads of cotton candy on sticky cones of paper, melting purple and red and green snow cones, and lemon shake-ups. The farmers and their families, roving packs of kids, all milling around booths and walking down the midway wearing stares of awe and wonder. Electric rainbows of flashing lights and carny folk - some as gaudy as the multicolored bulbs under which they stood - urged passers-by to STOP! RIGHT HERE! WIN A GOLDFISH FOR THE LADY! TEST YOUR STRENGTH! The fairground had a smell all its own, beyond the scent of fallen autumn leaves turning to mulch on the ground. In the animal barns was a heavy, earthy aroma where cows chewed cud while anxious pigs circled the muddied floor of their pens like bumper cars and the horses stood patiently observing it all with quiet, contemplative detachment - some sleeping with heads bowed, one hoof held off the ground. Beyond was the aroma of the confectioners' booths, the warm caramel simmering in the slow-heated bowls, the air-blown sugar of cotton candy, the grilling meat for the hamburgers and Philly cheese steaks, the hotdogs rotating on their spits, edible Ferris wheels waiting for buns and relish. Beyond all this, the fair had a smell all its own. More than autumn and celebration. It was elusive, but there nonetheless, and if you knew what to look for, could tilt your

WIDOW'S WALK WIDOW S WALK. steve beai. Copyright 1999 steve beai knows how to grabyour attention and not let you go until that final page. Set aside http://members.aol.com/eyesonweb/widowswalk.html
Extractions: This book is, in my opinion, the Ultimate Horror Novel - it is Horror, it is Thriller, it is Mystery, and it is a runaway train ride that will propel you to the most satisfying conclusion I have ever seen a writer craft. I usually summarize or at least give a thumbnail sketch of the plot in my reviews - I don't want to do that here, because I want you to come to this novel the same way I did, without any preconceptions of what it might be about. To qoute from WIDOW'S WALK: "When a living thing is killed by another living thing it's always murder." How can a line like that at the beginning of a story, presenting such a unique perspective, fail to captivate us right until the very last word? Steve Beai knows how to grab your attention and not let you go until that final page. Set aside several hours of uninterrupted reading, because if you're FORCED to put this book down before finishing it, you'll be thinking of nothing else but when you'll be able to pick it up again and jump right back onto that hurtling train. I picked it up before bed, and never GOT to bed. Since I'm in essence saying "Trust me on this one" without so much as giving you a hint of what the novel may be about, let me quote a passage:
