ISBN: 0-446-61082-8 check out website: www.twbookmark.com J ak is in need of a project for his Junior Task and racing across half the Solar System to help out an ex-girlfriend, Princess Shyf - sounds just perfect. He takes his buddy, a panth called Dujuv, and another close friend, Myxenna. They are pursued by the media in the form of Mreek Sinda who once got a very satisfying story from the exploits of Jak Jinnaka (see his previous outing in 'The Duke Of Uranium'). It's a bit of a shock to find that they have to join the Royal Palace Guards, who are performing more than just guard duties for the Princess. They barely survive the palace intrigue and are shipped out to avoid embarrassment. Unfortunately, their destination is the mining world of Mercury where they face an all-out war for survival and Jak meets his old enemy Bex Riveroma. This new kind of trainee spy in space enjoys plenty of sex with various partners, travels across vast swathes of space getting into and out of scrapes. Constantly risking his life, he is an observer in the dangerous politics of the Aerie.

    Extractions: Biography: John Barnes Chance (1932-1972) was born in Beaumont, Texas. In high school he played percussion in the school orchestra and began composing. Chance went on to study at the University of Texas where he received both bachelor's and master's degrees. His composition teachers included Clifton Williams, Kent Kennan, and Paul Pick. After studying at the University of Texas, Chance played timpani in the Austin Symphony Orchestra. He also played percussion, conducted and arranged music for the Fourth U.S. Army Band in San Antonio. Later, he joined the Eighth U.S. Army Band in Korea. After his discharge from the army, Chance was selected by the Ford Foundation to be part of the Young Composers Project.     Extractions: Skip down to read a review of A Princess of the Aerie (2nd book in series) In this third book in the series, Jak Jinnaka has been picked up by the Protectorates Administrative Service Corps (read: administrative duties) and posted on one of Mar's moons. It's also a very humorous book. Clarbo is...inconceivably stupid. The first words out of his mouth ruin the diplomatic talks just seconds before the King seems ready to give Jak the lifelog. Watching Jak trying to keep the mission on track with this man in tow is rather funny, even as you feel bad for him. The technology continues to create a deeply textured background. By now the marvels of this world have become second nature to it, yet they still maintain their marvelousness. I would kill for a purse. These small computers go everywhere with you, a simple command gets them to do everything from getting your laundry done to taxes to providing high security codes. All they ask in return is a push of the reward button. A wonderful mixture of espionage, sf, and an exploration of both friendship and politics, this book is filled with enough adventure...and an deliciously ironic twist...to please readers of any genre.

    Extractions: University of Virginia, Anth 509, Summer 1996 The Plymouth Colony Records cover thirty-eight years of the life of John Barnes, who lived out his life in the town of Plymouth from 1633-1671. Barnes married Mary Plummer 12 Sept. 1633. She died eighteen years later, on 2 June 1651. By 1653 Barnes had married Joan , but to date no record as to who she was has been found. The only mention of children born to Barnes and Mary Plummer in the vital records of Plymouth Colony (marriages, births and deaths) are Lydia , b. 24 April 1647, and John , who died 25 Dec. 1648. It is clear from other references in the Records , and from the genealogical section of William T. Davis' Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth that John was born in 1639, and so was nine when he died; that they had a son Jonathan , born in 1643, and two other daughters, Mary and Hannah . On 24 Aug. 1651, when Barnes drew up a deed of gift by which "some part" of his livestock was to be distributed to his children, "Jonathan, Mary, Hanna, and Lidia" were still living; Jonathan was eight years old and Lydia aged four. As Barnes was married to Joan by March of 1653, the deed of gift to his children would have been drawn up to protect their interests either in the event of his death, or of his remarriage. Following Barnes' death in 1671, Jonathan, who by then was 28 years of age, and his stepmother, Joan, were appointed by the Court as administrators of Barnes' estate.

In 1872 the brothers formed a partnership; the W. F. and John Barnes Company incorporated in 1884.

His record in 19 years as a U.S. senator has prompted liberal Democrats Howard Dean, for one to suggest he's too conservative and Republicans like party chairman Ed Gillespie to call him too liberal. For Kerry those charges are easily dismissed. What does cause trouble for Kerry is his need to explain and then explain some more the many contradictory votes and statements he's made over the years. Sometimes his explanations are quite credible. On " 60 Minutes " yesterday, he was shown a clip from an interview three decades ago in which he said he wasn't interested in running for president. Kerry's explanation was quite plausible. He said he felt at the time that his anti-Vietnam war activity would make a presidential bid impossible. Sometimes his explanations are dubious. On "Fox News Sunday" in Manchester yesterday, he was asked by host Chris Wallace why he voted against the war in Iraq in 1991 after Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait but for the invasion of Iraq last year. Dean also raised this issue yesterday. "Here is a gentleman who's running, who votes 'no' in 1991 when there are troops in Kuwait and oil fields are on fire, and then votes 'yes' and there turns out not to be a threat," Dean said.

Mother of Storms will probably be labelled as "a chilling ecological thriller!" but it's much more than that. A militaryexcuse me, peacekeepingstrike by the UN causes sudden, rapid global warming, which results in the birth of a superhurricane of unprecedented size, strength, and longevity. This storm spawns a number of daughter storms, which proceed to rampage around the planet, doing a pretty good job of bringing civilization to its knees. This book has flood, pestilence, and war; there's famine too, but it's mostly offstage. There's death and destruction of incomprehensible magnitude. Nations and coastlines crumble. Despite all this, a certain cheerful cynicism that pervades the book keeps it entertaining and amusing. That cheerful cynicism is also what makes Barnes' near-future society of 2028 so plausible. The world is quite different politically; the UN is the dominant political and military power, and the President of the United States is waging a constant battle to regain some measure of the States' former sovereignty. TV and newspapers have been largely supplanted by XV, which lets the public experience the full range of sensory experience being transmitted by a character. (Needless to say, this has revolutionized the porn industry.) The net still exists, but in a greatly expanded state (has to be; XV consumes an enormous amount of bandwidth). Cars drive themselves. There's a wonderful digression about a group of self-replicating robots on the moon who start to model some of the more unpleasant behaviors of societies.
