Constructing a working, believable society that has transcended the economic and political heirarchies that plague our world, and being able to frame a story around it that compells and isn't preachy is seldom a successful enterprise. To accomplish it within genre writing is a truly a feat, one pulled off again and again within the books of Iain M. Banks' Culture novel. And they are not merely explorations of Utopian ideas, but also timely and complex reconstructions of the concept of Space Opera, often asking difficult questions for which the answers don't faciley appear.

Extractions: SF Reviews by Aaron M. Renn By Author By Title By Date Reviewed Conclusion: Worth Reading Several people told me that if I liked Ken MacLeod I'd love Iain M. Banks. Well while in a neighborhood used bookstore recently, I saw a very cheap copy of Consider Phlebas and couldn't pass it up. Turns out it was a very good move because this was Banks' first SF book - always best to start at the beginning I say - and appears to be out of print in the United States. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Perhaps this was inevitable. MacLeod is writing the best SF around these days, so comparisons to him are bound to generate unreasonably high expectations. The book was solidly written and moderately enjoyable, but clearly this is nowhere near the level of, say, The Star Fraction. Banks actually reminded me more of Douglas Adams than Ken MacLeod. The protagonist is a shapeshifter who is trying to recover a sentient computer core for his employer and keeps getting sidetracked by absurd adventures. The backdrop is a war between a warlike species called the Idirans and an amalgamation of human worlds called the Culture. Interestingly, Bora Horza Gobuchul - our protagonist - is on the side of the Idirans. I may not know much about Banks' writing, but I do know that his books are frequently referred to as the Culture novels, so I assumed the Culture were the Good Guys. Turned out that this really isn't a Good Guys v. Bad Guys novel, which is one of its strengths.

The quality of his writing is consistently high, often very high, and occasionally perfect. Can you imagine a gruesome death for a computer? IMB can. I first read about Banks' Culture books nearly two years ago, but didn't get around to reading Consider Phlebas , the first published (but not first written) Culture novel until February last year. Since then I've been hooked enough to read all the others, as well as some of his mainstream fiction which, truth be told, is actually better than the SF books! I hereby present a shrine to Scottish sci-fi, with minimal spoilers. The place for a Banksian neophyte to begin is Consider Phlebas , but unless you're in a book shop right now, you'll probably want some kind of introduction to see whether you'll like the books or not. That having been made clear: The Culture is a group-civilisation formed from seven or eight humanoid species, space-living elements of which established a loose federation approximately nine thousand years ago. The ships and habitats which formed the original alliance required each others' support to pursue and maintain their independence from the political power structures - principally those of mature nation-states and autonomous commercial concerns - they had evolved from. The galaxy (our galaxy) in the Culture stories is a place long lived-in, and scattered with a variety of life-forms. In its vast and complicated history it has seen waves of empires, federations, colonisations, die-backs, wars, species-specific dark ages, renaissances, periods of mega-structure building and destruction, and whole ages of benign indifference and malign neglect. At the time of the Culture stories, there are perhaps a few dozen major space-faring civilisations, hundreds of minor ones, tens of thousands of species who might develop space-travel, and an uncountable number who have been there, done that, and have either gone into locatable but insular retreats to contemplate who-knows-what, or disappeared from the normal universe altogether to cultivate lives even less comprehensible.
