Extractions: In "Eight Legged Freaks" the residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight to the size of SUVs. And theyre hungry. When the alarm is sounded, it is up to mining engineer Chris McCormack (David Arquette) and Sheriff Sam Parker (Kari Wuhrer) to mobilize an eclectic group of townspeople, including the Sheriffs young son, Mike (Scott Terra), her daughter, Ashley (Scarlett Johansson) and paranoid radio announcer Harlan (Doug E. Doug), into battle against the bloodthirsty eight-legged beasts. With state-of-the-art visual effects conceived and rendered by CFX ("Independence Day"), "Eight Legged Freaks" updates such inspired genre classics as "Them" and "The Black Scorpion." Canadian Sf Book Reviews chris atack Project Maldon. NY Baen, 1997. 375pp. ISBN0671-87786-0chris atack s Project Maldon, is a surprisingly good read. http://www.edu.uleth.ca/runte/personal/sf/current.htm
Extractions: Index NY: Baen, 1997. 375pp. ISBN0-671-87786-0 Chris Atack's Project Maldon, is a surprisingly good read. Indeed, I was so surprised that I decided to go to the trouble of actually writing a review. I hope to convince you to rush out and buy a copy of this debute novel, in spite of the apparently good reasons not to. I must confess that I had originally bought the book only out of a sense of completion: I try to keep my Canadian sf library up to date. (That, and because Mr. Atack turned out to be standing next to me when I asked the clerk about new Canadian sf, and I was too embarrassed to reject his book with him actually standing there, watching.) I admit I really wanted to put the book back. The cover art two poorly drawn stealth bombers apparently attacking a space station, complete with firery explosions is not what you would call promising. The artwork is also, as it turns out, completely irrelevant: there aren't any space battles in the book. (Okay; there is a rather tense board meeting in Earth orbit, but I don't think that counts.) Worse even than the artwork is the typography: "Project Maldon" juts out of the cover like some cheezie movie marque. Even the author's name works against him, summoning up visions of glorified violence and hacknyed mayhem. This is not, I am sorry to say, a cover that would draw a second glance from even the most fanatical devotee of milateristic space opera.

His bearing was stiff, accentuating his height. Clothed in the dress uniform of a Tarn warrior, a scarlet coat ribbed with silver and a navy blue sash extending from one shoulder down the length of his back and attacked to the opposite hip, he made an impressive and rather intimidating show of restrained strength. Etched into his reptilian forehead was a pewter-colored tattoo of five small stars in a circle. Riker made a gesture to Harna's forehead, and to the tattoo, which revealed his clan. 'Of the Kala circle, the royal line. We are honored. I am of the circle Riker, of old America, of Earth, and my circle is unblemished.

Blue Sky Controversy chris Owen points out in a Usenet post from May 21, 1999, that Scientologywas very much concerned with the UK lawsuit against Jon atack. http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Library/Shelf/atack/holmes/bluesky.html
Extractions: A Piece of Blue Sky District Court Opinion Appellate Court Opinion In 1995, a British court found that Jon Atack had libeled the headmistress of the Greenfields School in East Grinstead and issued an injunction against Atack forbidding him "and his servants" from publishing the offending paragraph on page 336 of the book. The injunction reprints the entire paragraph in full. It is my understanding that while Jon Atack or his agents cannot distribute the book with the offending paragraph intact, the book can be sold to citizens of the UK, and, indeed, UK citizens have purchased A Piece of Blue Sky from US bookstores for years without problems. The book is NOT banned in the UK. For more information about the legal status of the book in the UK, read Chris Owen's Blue Sky Legal FAQ Earlier this year, netizens like Tilman Hausherr noticed that A Piece of Blue Sky by Jon Atack was missing from the internet bookseller amazon.com , which bills itself as "Earth's Biggest Selection." After politely writing back and forth with amazon, and getting nowhere, Tilman and Chris Leithiser aired their concerns on the Usenet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology
