Extractions: vnew@usc.edu PROJECT MALDON S POLITICAL PARABLES In the wake of the upcoming presidential election, the novel Project Maldon can be viewed as a cautionary tale of the perils of social engineering and of ruling by bureaucracy. Chris Atacks novel, which is set twenty-seven years in the future, tells the story of an Earth whose population is controlled by the Artificial Intelligence entity Helen and her agenda of Sociocybernetics, a program which is able to project likely outcomes of global events and is implemented based on those projections. Through his descriptions of three factions of society, the dependent Listers, the radically religious Accord, and the AI Helens Skellig Michael Institute, Atack delivers a commentary on and a warning against imposing a will on individuals as an excuse to serve the supposed greater good. The origin of the Listers in the novel seems to parallel current populations of people who receive entitlement programs. The Listers receive social and monetary assistance from their government, a help that ultimately renders them completely dependent on the government of Upper Canada for their survival. Families and relations had come to depend on this right, and when the government, through the recommendation of the Institute, takes the entitlement away, the Listers become violent, black market merchants or new subscribers to the religion of the Accord.
Extractions: The Skellig Michael Institute was founded by an eccentric and perhaps even repentant software billionaire in 2010. Fearing the collapse of Western civilization, he founded an Institute to shore up the tottering institutions. The Institute's home was to be "in the most remote locale available" with campuses in various parts of the globe. Ultimately headquartered in a high-orbit space facility, the Institute, self-governing, elitist, devoted to defining and preserving "civilization," rapidly achieved great prestige. Part university, part corporation, part private club and part monastery, the Skellig Michael has survived (except in Pakistan) and even flourished in the arid soil of the Post Millennium world. Monks in the Sky The Skellig Michael InstituteA Brief History Thursday, July 1, 2027 07:43 hours Wolfe's newest problem rear-ended him while he was being driven back from an early-morning meeting with Deputy Premier Beaufort. They had just stopped for a red light when a heavy impact threw the lightly-armored Isuzu sedan forward, pitching Wolfe back into the cheap upholstery and snapping his portable closed on the ddirate circuits of his interglove. A crunch of metal, a tinkle of glass. In the front seat, his security blanket swore volubly: "Jesus come quick, the crazy gumbah behind just rammed us. You alright, brother?" "So far." Wolfe looked around, wondering why his blankie had taken the same route as yesterday, then twisted to examine the big black Saturn that had crawled up their rear end. Collisions like this were a common prelude to mugging or worse, and they were in a free zone, with no backup in the immediate area. But there was only one person in the Saturn, and he looked harmless enough as he clambered out onto the asphalt: a cheery-looking fat man, middle-aged, with an open shirt and chubby, amiable features. His right arm was in a heavy cast; he walked slowly around to the crumpled hood of his car, shaking his head in vexation.

Extractions: Politics and religion have always been entwined. Religious belief is merely worldly belief reflected upward in the cosmic mirror. And truly, our revelation explains how faiths and governments replace one another as we struggle upwards towards the Final Truth. The time has come to implement our belief, our vision given to us in these terminal days: to cleanse the Earth in preparation for the Coming of the Light. The Last Convert , an authorized biography of Henry Stele, First Pastor, Temple of the Accord Economics says the more there is of something the cheaper it is. Thus air (until recently) was free, while diamonds commanded a high price. The same principle applies to human life. With twelve billion people swarming the globe, life is cheaper than it used to be. How much cheaper we are still discovering. Breaking Point , a collection of essays on Post Millennial topics Henrikus Grobius Friday, July 2 02:23 hours Walking to the Operations Room, vulgarly known as the Hole, Wolfe stifled another yawn. His watch seemed stuck somewhere in that endless interval between midnight and dawn when the body most craves rest, the mind is most prone to unwholesome fantasy. He held the heavy metal door open for the Deputy Premier, then followed him through into the dimness. As usual, the Hole reeked of cigarettes and ozone. Beside the holo stage, Rickki was talking quietly into a headset. She had had her hair cut short for the summer; by some trick of reversal, the effect was to make her appear more feminine. As Wolfe entered with the Deputy Premier she looked over and waved.

Extractions: Year 2027, and religious fanaticism is escalating while civilization crumbles. The only hope is that Project Maldon's advanced artificial intelligence named Helen will find the cure for the rot infecting the roots of civilization. But as Helen's increasingly odd directives trigger social unrest, murder and finally outright civil war, project director Edward Wolfe wonders if Helen has a hidden agenda of her own. And the truth is far stranger and more sinister than even he had imagined.

A few years from now, Canada's government is trying to hold together a society rapidly fragmenting into three opposing groups: the decreasing number of ordinary citizens; the rapidly growing right-wing religious organisation (known as "The Accord") and finally the "Listers", the hereditary unemployed on the welfare list. Edward Wolfe is a project manager for the Skellig Michael Institute. His current project is a big one - to save Canada from its imminent economic and social, and thereby to reduce the risk of the "Die-Back" - the global collapse of civilisation. He's guided in every detail by Helen, a massively competent Artificial Intelligence. However, The situation on the ground is deteriorating very quickly into chaos and violence. It's clear to Wolfe that it's time to think about evacuation for himself and his staff. Worst of all, Helen's begun to make some decisions which are logically and morally questionable, and if Helen has gone rogue all is lost. I often enjoy novels set after an economic or environmental collapse. I enjoy smart AIs (probably since 2001) and their use can highlight how humans think, However, I wasn't so keen on this book the first time I read it: it didn't enthrall me, it was just a straight read-through and while it was fairly entertaining, I put never anticipated rereading it. What rather surprised me was that I enjoyed it to the same degree, in fact possibly more, the second time I read it. Yes, it's OK. Not great, but not so bad. Read it on a rainy weekend, or on a long flight.
