Extractions: PRIZE CATCH: Chanda Rubin TENNIS FANS of the twin cities are in for a rare treat. The WTA Indian Open tournament, which will get underway at the SAAP courts in the Lal Bahadur stadium complex from February 3, will feature some of the top women players in the world such as Chanda Rubin, Elena Likhovtseva, Tamarine Tanasugarn, Clarissa Fernandes, Mary Pierce, Iroda Tulyaganova and others. The tournament which carries a total prize money of $1,40,000 is a Tier IV event of the WTA circuit and the organisers Globosport India founded by Mahesh Bhupathy, are going all out to make the event a big success. The prize catch is undoubtedly Chanda Rubin of USA who is currently ranked No.13 in the world rankings (as on January 13). Chanda will be the highest ranked woman player ever to play in India. She was tenth seeded in the Australian Open held recently and gave a good display before going down to eighth seeded Russian Anastasia Myskina in a hard-fought three set battle.

Extractions: HYDERABAD Feb. 8 . If the excesses of aggression recoil on their perpetrator, Iroda Tulyaganova was a casualty. Her amazing armoury could not thwart a 4-6, 4-6 defeat by Tamarine Tanasugarn in the WTA Indian Open final on the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) tennis complex's centre court here on Saturday. Iroda's pace was hot, her drops downright, her returns spiced with so much variety, at least initially. That she had Tanasugarn for a contender, who never gave up trying, was the problem. Wrenching Tanasugarn's serve in the third game of the first set itself, revealed a penchant to break free from the baseline bashing. Iroda won that game on a drop and lob exchange. The next four games went with serve until Tanasugarn desisted from errors, while Iroda fell prey to them, dropping serve on the eighth. While Tanasugarn hardly rose and shone with aces, the number of service winners piled up steadily. With amazing control, the second seed steered the ball in, come what may. And as Iroda's game crumbled, Tanasugarn consolidated hers.

Tamarine, the No. 3 seed, needed one hour, 18 minutes to subdue Lee with a series of strong crosscourt ground strokes. Tamarine, 38th on the WTA Tour, will next face China's top ranked player, Li Fang, who took less than an hour to overcome Miho Saeki of Japan, 6-2, 6-0. In scorching heat, Li, ranked 45th, hit hard from the baseline to defeat Saeki. In another second-round battle, Silvija Talaja of Croatia, who scored an upset victory over top seed and 1997 champion Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia in the first round, crushed China's Ding Ding, 6-4, 6-0. Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus, the tourney's fifth seed, moved into the quarterfinals when her opponent Marlene Weingartner of Germany, retired with exhaustion while trailing 3-6, 0-5.
