Extractions: Martina Hingis and Jana Novotna defeated Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva, 6-3, 6-3 An Interview With MARTINA HINGIS and JANA NOVOTNA Q. Martina, can you describe the play to come back and get some measure of revenge for yesterday? MARTINA HINGIS: It's still nice to come back here and play the Grand Slam Finals in doubles. I was kind of making history today for myself. It's just nice. We were kind of sitting in the car, nobody was really happy. We're kind of so spoiled from our success we had earlier, or just me anyway with singles, you are a little disappointed. Still, when you win a Grand Slam in doubles, it is still nice, at least you have a nice trip back home. Q. Jana, your reaction to the title. JANA NOVOTNA: I am extremely happy because MARTINA HINGIS: You really look like it. JANA NOVOTNA: I'm extremely happy simply because of the reason when I started to play with Martina this year I expected to have such a great year, and we really did. And we lost only one doubles so far together this year, so pretty much unbeaten at all. It just was great to come back especially we had a tough couple of days. Martina especially losing to Lindsay, it's never easy to come back and play doubles. She was the more professional. It's pretty obvious that Lindsay was tired and she was satisfied with her singles victory. And Martina was very professional to come back and play like that. It's very hard.

Extractions: Martina Hingis defeated Jana Novotna, 7-6(1), 6-4 An Interview With MARTINA HINGIS: Q. Feel a little tired at the second game of the second set? MARTINA HINGIS: : Well, yeah, when she went through 3-1 and when she was leading there, so I started to think about what I have to do now because I wanted to keep the points shorter and I had to concentrate and I did it a lot more than I did before, when I was fresh fresh coming on the court and then she played very good first set, when I was leading 3-Love and then she came back; she almost didn't make one mistake, especially from the forehand, she hit so many winners today and then she helped me a lot in the tiebreaker, that was very good for me, but I was 3-1 down so I was a little tired of all these matches, but I am very happy about what I did today. Q. Do you think in the next Grand Slam you are going to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles again? MARTINA HINGIS: : Well, it is the first time that I played all three and I came in all three, the semis, so, I mean, you never I would never think about that I can get through all three to the semis. I never had a big Grand Slam tournament like this year at the U.S. Open, so well, I enjoy to play tennis, especially if I play like I did in the last week, so well, I have a lot of fun to play doubles, and I have great partners, so, why not?

She shocked the world with her dresses cut just above the calf and always entertained the galleries. Suzanne Lenglen: The good old days This was never more true than against American Mark K. Browne in Paris. The match remains the quickest ever Grand Slam final, for Lenglen won 6-1 6-0 in 27 minutes. Lenglen's tennis was supreme as she clinched her second successive French title, but not without a fuss. She broke down in tears after just four games, and then sipped brandy between sets before taking the acclaim of a bewildered public.

Czech veteran Novotna failed to find the form that secured her an emotional first Grand Slam title last year as she was dispatched with ease by her American opponent. Davenport dominated the error-prone fifth seed in a lacklustre match to extend her career record against Novotna to 6-0. ... Early breaks Lindsay Davenport: First quarter-final win at the third attempt After the start of the match was delayed an hour by rain, Davenport set the tone by breaking Novotna to love in the first game. She then broke twice more to take the opening set in 32 minutes. The second set was delayed at 4-3 for an hour by rain - but when play resumed 23-year-old Davenport put Novotna out of her misery.
